Work! Experience! Discover!

March 2016

Dear Alumni

We're hard at work, preparing our new alumni platform for you and it should be ready within the next couple of months. Once it's ready we'll send you the link to login and invite you to give us some feedback.

Initially, you might not see too much difference between the new and old platforms. We have tried to keep the functionality of the old system, but you should see immediately that it's much easier to navigate and use. Once we're up and running we'll be able to add lots of exciting new functionality, most important of which is to connect you to other IAESTE alumni around the world.

If your company is interested in sponsoring the new platform, do get in touch. We can offer great branding opportunities, as well as access to potential new employees and other benefits.

We're also working on a new website, to be launched in the first half of 2016. The great thing about both the new alumni platform and website, is that we're working on both projects with IAESTE alumni. It's always exciting to work with people that understand what we do and are motivated to give back and help us improve. We're always open to such opportunities, so do get in touch if you have any ideas.

Globalise your workforce with an IAESTE trainee

With a little help from my friends

This promotional video was made by IAESTE UK, managed by the British Council. It's a great example of the impact an IAESTE traineeship can have on both students and employers. If you know anyone that might be interested in offering traineeships through IAESTE, please share this video with them and ask them to get in touch.

The long and winding road from trainee to employer

Germany was my destination and I was one amongst the first “lucky” batch in Sultan Qaboos University to ever be in the IAESTE student exchange programme. I had never been to Germany, let alone Europe; I was excited, and I knew that this was going to be an experience that I would never forget. Yup, that was exactly what happened.

I was accepted for an internship at GSI, a Heavy Ion Research facility in the suburbs of Darmstadt, Germany. My work involved running experiments with High Vacuum chambers. Being in such a facility, in a country such as a Germany, has definitely added a lot to me. I have learnt that time is not equal to money, but much more valuable. I met other students from all over the world, which introduced to other cultures, and I made friends with students who come from countries that I have never been to!

Apart from the training, knowledge, and experience, IAESTE did include a good share of fun! After all, paying a visit to Pairs, Belgium, Brussels, and Bonn, was only a train trip away! Louvre Museum ... Eiffel Tower, few of the landmarks that I visited!

15 years later, now being a faculty member at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering – SQU, I feel obliged to support IAESTE in any possible way. That is why, in the last 3 years, I have been offering internship opportunities every summer. I want those international students to have a similar experience to the one I had long ago, but this time, it will be here in Oman!

Keep an eye on our events page in the next couple of months as we'll be posting details of all the great summer events for trainees, to which alumni are usually invited too!

It's a great chance to re-establish contact with your national or local committee and an opportunity to have fun!

The first event we've received details of is the Galichnik Wedding Festival Weekend in Macedonia, which looks like it will be a lot of fun. You can find out all the details and how to register here.
