Last December, as the pandemic neared its terrible height here in the UK, post offices were no longer safe  places to be. And so, in lieu of Christmas cards for my Patreon supporters, I made personalised, private videos for each of them, while dressed as Santa. They seemed to enjoy this.

This year, going to the post office with a pile of handwritten festive cards - perhaps with a Santa beard for a mask - feels more tenable, and so I'm getting physical once again.

I've designed the front cover of a custom Christmas card, along the lines of the image above (you can see the actual card cover at Patreon). I'm going to get my design printed up on full-colour cards, and send one to every Patreon backer, anywhere in the world, who is pledging at the Terrifying level or above by 12pm GMT on Wednesday December 1. Each card will be dedicated and signed by me... or maybe Jack Sparks... or Kate Collins from Ghoster... it's all up to you.

If you've yet to join my Patreon community, you might wonder why I'm telling you this. Well, thanks to my limited-time Black Friday Weekend special offer, you too can claim one of these cards, when you become a patron at the Terrifying pledge tier or above, before 12pm GMT on Wednesday December 1.

Take a look at the three Patreon pledge tiers below, ALL of which will make you eligible to receive a physical Christmas card. After your first payment is complete, you are then of course free to edit your pledge down to the minimum Chilling tier of $1/£1 (or edit it up, mwahahaaaaa) or cancel it altogether. I'm not the boss of you! Whatever you choose to do, and for however long, you'll remain a legend in my eyes for supporting me and my family. Thank you so much, for even reading this far.

You can also choose to examine the tiers directly at Patreon itself, right here.

Here are the three eligible Patreon pledge tiers...

The TERRIFYING pledge tier (about £4 or $5 per month + VAT)
  • You will receive this special, physical, never-to-be-repeated Christmas card in the mail before December 25 (barring unavoidable international delays, ulp!), dedicated to you and signed by me.
  • Just like everyone else on the Terrifying tier, if you remain a patron for the following 12 months, you will receive a thank you postcard from me (which continues on an annual basis, for as long as you're a patron.)
  • As soon as possible after you sign up, I'll send you a personalised greeting video, via Patreon's private messaging system.
  • You will be thanked by name onscreen at the end of my YouTube videos and newsletters, for as long as you remain a patron.
  • Plus more perks! You can see the full list under the Terrifying heading here
  • You will receive this special, physical, never-to-be-repeated Christmas card before December 25, dedicated to you and signed by me OR one of my fictional characters, including Jack Sparks, on request! (Just let me know if you'd like it to be from a fictional character, by sending me a private message at Patreon.)
  • Just like everyone else on the Oh Dear God... tier, if you remain a patron for the following 12 months, you will receive a thank you postcard from me (which continues on an annual basis, for as long as you remain a patron.)
OR from one of my fictional characters.
  • Your name will appear higher up the thanks list at the end of my YouTube videos, and remain there for as long as you're a patron.
  • If you include your Twitter handle on your new Patreon profile, I will give you a grateful shout-out on the Twitters!
  • Plus more perks! See the full list under the Oh Dear God... heading here
  • You will receive this special, physical, never-to-be-repeated Christmas card before December 25, dedicated to you and signed by me OR one of my fictional characters, including Jack Sparks! (Just let me know if you'd like it to be from a fictional character, by sending me a private message at Patreon.) PLUS Your Christmas card envelope will also contain a signed The Last Days Of Jack Sparks bookmark! I now have very few of these left. Full disclosure: depending on the final size of the card, I may have to fold this in half. Sorry!
  • Just like everyone else on the Cardiac Arrest tier, if you remain a patron for the following 12 months, you will receive a thank you postcard from me (which continues on an annual basis, for as long as you remain a patron) OR from one of my fictional characters, on request.
  • Your name will appear higher up the thanks list at the end of my YouTube videos
  • You get the thank you postcard from me (or a fictional character, see above) every SIX months, instead of 12 as on the previous tiers
  • I will thank you in the acknowledgements section of any novel or self-published book of mine that is published while you've been a patron at this level for three months or more!
  • Pledge at this level here and surprise the hell out of me. :-)
So! Remember, you have until 12pm GMT on Wednesday December 1 to claim your Christmas card, plus all the other giddy perks that come with Patreon membership. One of the main things I love about Patreon, by the way, is the community aspect. I can chat with patrons directly, without having to bypass social media algorithms or dodge spam folders. I regularly run Ask Me Anything Q&As, and polls, and let patrons in on aspects of my life that I would be unlikely to discuss in public. This summer, I recorded a 50-minute video chat about writing with Doctor Who writer James Moran, which we recorded exclusively for our Patreon backers! You'll find yet more reasons to become a patron - 10 of them in fact - at the bottom of this email, after I sign off.

JOIN USSSSSS, right here at Patreon.

I hope to make your personalised greeting video soon, and then write and sign your Christmas card!

Any questions? Absolutely feel free to reply to this email and ask away.

Pre-yuletide wishes,

Jason

P.S. When I reach the monthly pledge total of £1000 on Patreon, I will privately share a deleted chapter from my novel The Last Days Of Jack Sparks with patrons. So your pledge - even if you back me at the Chilling level for $1 or £1 - will shove me closer to unlocking those hidden words! (I mean, obviously, this chapter was deleted for a reason, but it should hopefully still be interesting to read, and I'll explain exactly why it was deleted...)

P.P.S. Oh! As I mentioned above, all my patrons on the above tiers get thanked in my newsletters. Soooo, a big thank you to (deep breath):

Repeated from my Halloween newsletter: 10 reasons to back me at Patreon!

Now let's get one thing straight: there are countless ways to support me without spending money, whether it's borrowing my books from your local library (yes, we authors do get paid for that, so there's no need to feel guilty!), watching my YouTube videos or tolerating me on Twitter. But if you'd like to go further, there's always Patreon, where you can support me with a monthly pledge! Here are some reasons why you might well enjoy doing that...

1) Patreon allows me to create a fun, fenced-off community, where you can get involved as little or as much as you like. I love that I can write and chat directly to my patrons, garnering their opinions on things like YouTube video thumbnails, or posting exclusive diary entries for them to read among lots of other exclusive content. I even tell them the odd thing that I wouldn't post on a public forum.

2) My Patreon backers who pledge at the Terrifying tier or above get an onscreen credit at the end of all my videos on the aforementioned Jason Arnopp's Terrifying House Of Obsession channel on YouTube!

3) This summer, I got together with writer James Moran (Doctor Who, Torchwood, Spooks, Severance, lots more) to shoot a Zoom video about writing, specifically for our respective patrons. The theme we decided to cover was the difference between writing prose and scripts. The result was really interesting and often quite funny into the bargain. The video ran for 50 minutes, and remains for patrons' eyes only! You can see the video thumbnail at the top of this article, although you'd probably figured that out already.

4) When you back me at Patreon, you do two truly astonishing things. You help me to support my family and to feel more secure in a bizarre and unpredictable career like writing, which if I'm honest, can often feel like feast or famine. And that means the world to me. I do my best to treat my backers like royalty!

5) Oh, and when you back me at Patreon, the system pings an email into my inbox AND makes a notification pop up from the Patreon app on my phone. Whichever of these I happen to see first, it gives me a real buzz of happiness and indeed surprise! It's an amazing feeling that someone wants to back you, regardless of whether they pledge £1 or £25 per month.

6) When backers support me at the Terrifying tier or above (this is about $5/£4.50, in case you were wondering), I record a personalised welcome video for them, while sitting at my desk, just as I do in my YouTube videos. I then upload this video to YouTube, keeping it unlisted (private), and personally send my brand new patron the link via Patreon DM. The end result looks like a YouTube video that talks to them, which tends to be a pretty fun effect!

7) My backers get to see my YouTube videos early, before the rest of the world. Sometimes, for one scheduling reason or another, this may not be possible, but I do my damndest to make sure that happens. For instance, they got to see my latest 'Halloween VHS' video first, this afternoon. It's only polite! I also often tell backers about YouTube videos I'm thinking about making.

8) Doctor Who fans: I created a combined PDF of both parts of my Doctor Who Magazine interview with Tom Baker, which I conducted at his home in 2009. I then wrote a new foreword for the epic piece and made this available to patrons only.

9) I'll often make exclusive videos for patrons only, generally off the cuff. This summer, for instance, I attended a car boot sale for the first time since the pandemic began, and immortalised this visit with a video for patrons only. The other Sunday, I shot a video while walking from my home to Brighton train station, as an intro for the diary entries I then wrote for them on the train.

10) I know, from my own experience of supporting people at Patreon (YouTubers like Steve Benway and Atari Archive, for instance) that it really makes me happy to back people who bring value to my life. Perhaps if I've somehow managed to bring value to yours, you might feel similarly good cheer if you support me via the Patreon route.

11) Oh, and here's another good reason I totally forgot! Every year, I send patrons at the Terrifying level or above a seaside Brighton postcard, to wherever they are in the world, to say thanks! At the next tier up, I get my friend Jack Sparks to write the postcard for me...
