Hi <<First Name:>>,

In April I was doing one of my favourite things, which is heading into universities and running careers sessions with researchers! A few years ago, it could feel like I was raising a taboo subject, when I started talking about career options outside of academia. For some PhDs the idea of working outside of a university was unheard of, or perceived as second-rate or abandoning one's principles.

This year, in my sessions for conferences at Oxford Brookes and York, it was fantastic to hear researchers and lecturers talking positively about ALL of the career options open to PhDs. It really shows the progress that's been made in changing perceptions of what researchers can do (and should do) post-PhD!
I especially enjoyed hearing researchers introduce themselves under a professional title, rather than just as someone 'doing a PhD'. My favourite examples were: a professional conservationist, a legal consultant, a theatre maker and an events organiser. Very impressive and employable titles!
Please do drop me a note via the contact form on my blog, if you'd like to invite me to a careers event at your university or organisation.

Coming soon

Talking about careers online!

If all goes to plan, during the summer I'll be launching a new venture: a regular Google Hangout, in partnership with another UK-based careers consultant. If you have questions about your career options or professional development, this will be the place to get answers.

The Hangouts will be recorded and made available on the Jobs on Toast YouTube channel for future viewing. I'll be posting more details on my blog and social media soon! Please drop me an email if you'd like me to invite you to the first Hangout.

Books

Careers advice made beautiful!

Every once in a while, I come across a resource that makes me go 'wow', it's just so good! That was my reaction to a new ebook aimed at researchers called From Scholar to Dollar, by Dr Anna Harrison. A free ebook, written by a doctoral graduate, cleverly illustrated, beautifully laid out and with lots of great careers advice - what more could you ask for?!

My favourite part is the section on learning to communicate the value of your work to others. As Anna explains, you need to talk about your work in a way that explains its benefits to other people, rather than just why it's interesting to you. 'Value needs to be articulated in the currency of the recipient' (p. 24) - a handy mantra when selling yourself and your capabilities to employers.
