Paul Huschilt's
Expect Everything

Are You a Happy Bump on a Log?

On a recent trip to Winnipeg, I visited a nature museum which included a large terrarium of a marsh.  All of the soggy suspects where there including three very happy turtles.

It’s actually pretty hard to tell if a turtle is happy or not. But they did move their heads every couple of minutes, which I took as euphoric turtle self-expression.

As I watched them I thought – what a great life these turtles have, which includes everything.  They get fed.  They get cared for.  They have no predators.  They even get to rest on a real log lifted from a real marsh while enjoying 60 watts of artificial sunlight overhead.

But then I thought – what could their lives be if only they lived outside in the real marsh? What would they be up to, I wonder?

There’s a Yiddish proverb, “To the worm in horseradish, the whole world is horseradish”, which I translate here to mean something like "the turtle who lives like a bump on a log in an artificial marsh doesn’t know that the entire globe is calling to it".

If the whole world is calling to turtles in artificial marshes or worms in horseradish, isn’t it reasonable to assume it is calling to each of us as well? I think it’s important for everyone to periodically notice if they are just resting as bumps on logs.

There’s not necessarily a right place or a wrong place to be, so don’t rush out the door.  But it serves us well to ask why we’re in one place over another. These next couple of weeks, as you sit on your log, how about asking what other logs are out there waiting to be sat on too?

Have a great couple of weeks!
