We're delighted to launch the first edition of The BPEC Brief, our newsletter to keep you up to date with news and policy updates affecting the training and FE sector. If you have any colleagues that might also find this of interest, please ask them to sign up and forward this email to them.

New Plumbing Apprenticeship Standard 

A new level 3 Apprenticeship standard for Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians has been launched this month as part of the Government’s Trailblazer programme.

The standard, developed by plumbing employers and led by Seddon Construction Ltd, has been designed to more effectively meet the needs of the industry and includes a number of improvements that will benefit both the learner and their employer.

In addition to strengthening the Maths and English requirement, grading will be introduced to encourage apprentices to strive for excellence. A clear link to Engineering Technician status has also been incorporated to improve and encourage greater professional registration across the industry. Read more...

Outside of the plumbing industry, you can also find out more about all the occupations approved by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) to develop an apprenticeship standard.

Renewable Heat Training Forum to be launched

A national forum that will address best practice and quality assurance of renewable heat training is to be launched by SummitSkills. Designed to enhance the skills infrastructure underpinning the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (DRHI), the forum will comprise awarding organisations, MCS/installer representatives, industry bodies, qualifications regulators and training providers, among others. Growth Through People skills report

The Growth Through People report is a 5-point manifesto for fixing the country’s skills crisis drawn up by the UK Commission on Employment and Skills with the CBI and the TUC. Recommendations include completely rethinking the way we train workers to put employers and trade unions in charge and transforming the way schools and colleges prepare young people for the world of work. The AELP has provided a page which brings together the relevant documentation for the Government’s proposed reforms to Apprenticeships in England and AELP’s response to them. It includes consultation documents and links to information on Trailblazer Standards. Read more...

For Traineeships, information for employers and training organisations on eligibility, what traineeships will provide, how they will be delivered and funded can be found on the Gov.UK website.

Ofsted: Construction good practice and regional events

Examples of good practice in construction training from providers inspected by Ofsted is now available online. 

You can also learn more about the changes to the way Ofsted will inspect schools, further education and skills and early years provision from September at regional events taking place in June and July. Read more...

Scotland is world-leading skills hub

New international research, due to be published shortly, will confirm Scotland’s global position as a world leading training ground for the oil and gas sector. The Scottish Enterprise survey of senior global industry figures will show that 74 per cent believed Scotland was one of the world’s leading training grounds for the industry. The Welsh Government has launched new interactive learning packs for educational practitioners focused on professional learning and leadership development opportunities throughout your career continuum.  

New Chair for NI Strategic Advisory Forum on Apprenticeships

Dr Bryan Keating has been named as Chair of the interim Strategic Advisory Forum on Apprenticeships. The Forum is a partnership between employers, training providers, trade unions and government and provides advice and guidance on how key elements of the reformed apprenticeship system will be delivered in Northern Ireland.
