Spring Update from Naffziger Society President Mika Varma

April 2, 2019

Dear Naffziger Members,

I want to reach out to provide an update on the activities of the Naffziger society. Thus far in my term as President, there have been a number of changes to our leadership and programming. I also wanted to provide you with the dates for our upcoming events this year so you can mark them on your calendar.

Executive Council

One of the most important changes is that we have added the new position of President-Elect to our Executive Council. I am happy to announce Ed Chen ’00 as our current PE. He is Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Emory University and has been a longstanding supporter of the Naffziger as an alumnus.

Michelle L. Li ’04 is continuing in her role as Secretary-Treasurer and Electron Kebebew, M.D. ’02, Jade S. Hiramoto, M.D. ’03, Jennifer Y. Wang, M.D. ’09 are joining Rita Mukhtar, M.D. ’13, Shinjiro Hirose, M.D. ’05, and Lan Vu, M.D. ’10 as Members at Large.

In other changes to our council, our long-time Executive Secretary, Annette Bronstein, is retiring after her many years of dedicated service to our organization. Although we are sad to see her go, we wish her the best in her future endeavors. Our new Executive Secretary is Laura Dissmeyer who started in January of this year.

Resident Engagement

We have also added three resident representatives, Yeranui Ledesma, M.D., Yvonne Kelly, M.D. and Arya Zarinsefat, M.D. to improve communication, outreach, and programming for our current trainees.  One important change is that we will have a party for the chief residents that is separate from the annual Naffziger meeting to celebrate the completion of their training.

This event will take place on May 10th evening at Kelly’s Mission Rock in San Francisco. Please save the date and attend if you can. The residents will be choosing a faculty member to introduce them and will be provided certificates of membership to the society. In addition to the general surgery chief residents, we are adding the three graduating plastic surgery residents who have shared their first three years of training with these chiefs.

Membership and Alumni

Our new chair in the UCSF Department of Surgery, Dr. Julie Ann Sosa, is eager to join forces with our organization and strengthen ties between the Department and alumni. We are eager to expand our Executive Council members beyond the Department to improve the engagement of our alumni across the country. Self-nominations are welcome, so please sign up!

The Naffziger Visiting Professorship

Dr. Sosa has reinstituted The Naffziger Visiting Professorship that will bring 3-4 speakers to Grand Rounds each year. Most recently, Dr. Patricia Turner, Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago, spoke about surgeons as leaders and generational shifts.

Naffziger Day - Save the Date

We have decided to conduct the 3rd annual UCSF Naffziger Surgical Society Day to coincide with a time-honored tradition in the Department of Surgery, The Loupes Ceremony. The Loupes Ceremony provides loupes to second-year residents in honor of a graduate of our residency program. As Naffziger alumni, many of you have already been honored, but we hope to have more members recognized and attend in person. This will take place Friday, Sept. 27. Location (in San Francisco) is TBD.
Please save the date!

Yours respectfully,

Madhulika "Mika" Varma, M.D.
