Free Theatre Christchurch (est. 1979) is New Zealand's longest running producer of experimental theatre. The professional company serves as an interdisciplinary performance laboratory where artists work together to create innovative, high quality, performance work.
We're days away from presenting a work in development The Mauricio Kagel Project as part of the 2015 Christchurch Arts Festival. This is the culmination of a long development and intensive devising process with composer Gao Ping and conductor Hamish McKeich. We also have the pleasure of collaborating with some of Christchurch's finest musicians. Influenced by John Cage and the Dada cabarets, Kagel created and developed a new music-theatre genre, where music-making itself becomes theatre as a comic, absurd and above all joyously playful activity. We're excited at the ways this project can grow and develop following this initial development period.

And this Saturday Night (12th Sep), also as part of the Christchurch Arts Festival, we invite you to an Ubu Night which explores the countercultural world of The Beat Generation.
Joined by collaborators from The Mauricio Kagel Project, the Free Theatre company will inhabit the words, music and performances of angelheaded hipsters such as Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Cassidy, Kyger and Vollmer. As they weave their yarns and burn for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo, a hip concoction of Jazz and Moroccan cuisine will be on offer. An exciting fusion, not to be missed!
