Free Theatre Christchurch (est. 1979) is New Zealand's longest running producer of experimental theatre. The professional company serves as an interdisciplinary performance laboratory where artists work together to create innovative, high quality, performance work.
Ubu and his friends, Ophelia, Hamlet, Yorick, and Gertrude, invite you to a theatrical "mouse-trap" with music inspired by Waits, Cohen, Cave, Minogue, PJ Harvey and Laurie Anderson and special guest appearances from the Ghost of Norman Kirk and John Key (as Uncle Claudius).
HOW NOT TO BE HAMLET is a major project for 2017 and will be developed through a special series of Ubu Nights, starting with this one.
Something is rotten in the state of New Zealand. But we don't quite know what it is or what to do about it, or if we can do anything at all. We have lost our identity and lost control of our destiny. The only way left to act is as a puppet or a clown - like Hamlet. Someone once said that "people don't want much, just someone to love, somewhere to live, somewhere to work and something to hope for" - this now sounds like the voice of a ghost from a different place and a different time. But maybe this voice, the voice of Norman Kirk, will urge us to act again. For Hamlet, to be or not to be means to accept the world the way it is or to kill himself. We ask ourselves how not be Hamlet. How to "act"?

As always we have a series of exciting projects on the go, including Ars Acustica – the next step in our ongoing collaboration with composer Gao Ping and conductor Hamish McKeich. The development of this project just had a major boost – we are delighted to announce that we have received a Creative New Zealand Arts Grant. We're very excited about the progression of this project, with Sichuan Opera performers to be resident at The Gym in the Arts Centre of Christchurch next year working together with Christchurch actors and musicians. We're also discussing the project with our friends at the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Christchurch Arts Festival and we'll be keeping you updated as things develop.
It's been great to help organise and present a range of special events and gatherings through this busy period of the year. If you're keen to use The Gym for an event please contact email@example.com.
