Free Theatre Christchurch (est. 1979) is New Zealand's longest running producer of experimental theatre. The company serves as a laboratory for established and emerging artists to work together to create innovative, high quality, professional performance work.
We’ve been working with our partners the Arts Circus to get our new space (The Gym) up and running in the Arts Centre. We are thankful to The Arts Centre, Christchurch City Council, Creative New Zealand and The Canterbury Community Trust for their wonderful support of this project. We are also grateful to Steel and Tube, ZNO, Mainland Foundation, Pub Charity and the dedicated and generous support of Kendons Accounting and Duncan Cotterill Lawyers. We are creating a flexible space that, in many ways, will reflect the city as a work-in-progress, a place for the experimental and the new, where alternatives are possible and new ways of thinking and acting are encouraged.
And the first events in The Gym?...
Ubu, Free Theatre's Patron Saint, invites you to a series of Friday night events where performance is combined with hospitality in ways that he describes as Pataphysical.
This Friday is dedicated to Dada and Surrealist friends like Alfred Jarry, Tristan Tzara, Hugo Ball, Frida Kahlo, Eric Satie, Arnold Schönberg, and others. Entrance is free, the bar is open from 6pm stocked with Cassels beer and Black Estate wine and special chefs will present platters of French delicacies.
Thank you to Creative New Zealand for providing a grant to support the artists involved. If you would like to help make this first performance in the new space possible, please donate to our crowd-funding campaign with Boosted.
On 1st and 2nd November we will be running a weekend of youth workshops for ages 12 - 24 as part of CERA's Winter Chill Festival. Thanks to CCC Creative Communities we will also have some weekend workshops focused around the Kafka's Amerika project. Booking information for these workshops to come.
