Canadian Obesity Summit an Open Forum for Dialogue

Dear CON-RCO Member,
Preparations are well under way for the 3rd Canadian Obesity Summit in Vancouver this May, and I am convinced it will exceed all expectations. Since the event is as much about networking across different disciplines and sectors as it is a scientific conference, I thought this would be a good time to remind ourselves of CON-RCO’s core mission.
CON-RCO is not and has never been an advocacy group, beyond raising awareness that obesity is an important public health issue requiring the attention and dedication of health professionals, researchers, educators, policy makers, NGOs and industry.
Rather, the network’s mandate since its inception in 2006 has been to create a forum where individuals and groups who have a stake in obesity can share, discuss and debate topics related to reducing the burden of excess weight on Canadians, even if in the end they agree to disagree on specific issues. Our belief is that practical solutions to many of the issues wrapped up in the obesity crisis will be found through this type of discourse.
It is in this spirit that we call on everyone with an interest in obesity to join us in Vancouver to share your opinions and views. As obesity is not a problem that the public sector alone can solve, I particularly call on the private sector to join us at the Summit. Whether your company represents food or pharmaceuticals, employers or benefit groups, surgical or non-surgical weight-management products or services, diagnostics or laboratory supplies, the Summit is your chance to interact with and present your company to over 1,200 attendees.
No matter, where you stand on specific issues, as long as we can all agree to engage every relevant interest group, CON-RCO will have done its job of "networking" and fostering necessary dialogue.
I firmly believe that no one sector or organization has all the answers, but that together we can find a way forward.
I look forward to meeting you all at the Summit.

Board Chair, CON-RCO
