MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY

The Duvall Farmer's Market is committed to providing access to fresh, local, healthy food to all members of the community, regardless of income.

The market accepts EBT, Electronic Benefit Transfer, formerly known as Food Stamps. Most regional markets do not accept EBT. EBT may be used to purchase fresh or processed food, but NOT prepared, ready to eat, served food. This is in compliance with federal laws regarding use of EBT. To utilize EBT, market patrons need to come to the market information booth at the base of the steps for the card to be scanned in exchange for tokens. The tokens may then be used with any vendor with eligible products. This system allows the market to absorb the administrative costs of providing EBT instead of passing the cost on the the farmers and other vendors. To date the market has exchanged $818 this season.

The increase access to fresh produce, The Farmers Market also has a Fresh Bucks program, which will match the first $10 of EBT used on produce. This applies only to produce, not processed or prepared foods. Fresh Bucks will be given by request when EBT is exchanged for tokens. We are very grateful to an anonymous donor who provided the funding for the program this year. The market is looking at securing reliable funding to carry this program through in future years. Thus far we have distributed $329 in Fresh Bucks.

The market also solicits donations of fresh produce for the Food Pantry at Holy Innocents Catholic Church. Three crates are set up at various points throughout the market, usually adjacent to farmers. The farmers are very generous with donations of produce, and we encourage the market patrons to contribute as well. Holy Innocents Church has sponsored a food pantry for more than fifteen years. Fifty to sixty households are served week, which represents over two hundred individuals.  Leftover food is taken to the St. Vincent de Paul store in Monroe where it is cooked into hot meals and served to low income individuals and families.  To date the Farmers Market has contributed over 800 lbs of fresh produce this season.

Additionally, Duvall Farmers Market supports the efforts of Sno Valley Harvest, a program based out of Hopelink in Carnation, which gleans fresh edible produce from farmers' fields after the harvest is complete. This produce is then distributed to regional food banks. To date, the program has gleaned over 4500 lbs of produce from twenty one gleaning events in 2014.  Market board members participate as volunteers.  The program is currently seeking more volunteers, particularly in the Duvall area. To volunteer for this effective and much needed program, please contact Marlene at mlambert@hope-link.org or call 425-333-4163 ex 107.
