SQUAW CREEK CATTLE COMPANY
Squaw Creek Cattle Company is an entirely family owned and operated farm located in Everson, WA. Jeff and Lynette Hemnes, their son Luke and family, and daughter Tessa and family all live in Everson and take care of the daily workings of SCCC. Extending even further, Grandpa Lawrence spends much of his time feeding cattle, working on maintenance, and being helpful in any way he can. A cousin sells Squaw Creek beef in the Seattle area.
Farming runs deep in the family blood. While not all growing up on the same type of farm, all married spouses that grew up on farms. It wasn't planned that way – it seems they just really love farmers. Everyone brings different strengths to the table and they are constantly learning new things about farming and about having a farm to retail business. They are all dedicated to providing their cattle with a healthy, humane life and environment, and providing consumers with tasty, quality beef that they can feel good about eating.
What makes Squaw Creek beef unique is that it is pastured with a supplement of spent brewer's grain from Boundary Bay Brewery and Bistro in Bellingham. Spent brewer's grain is the byproduct leftover from the process of crafting beer. It consists of barley and hops, and has a high protein and fiber content that is very digestible for cattle. It is different than traditional grain in that all of the starch is out of the product because the starch ends up in the beer. Since the by product is left without starch, it contributes to the grass fed diet of the cattle. They appreciate being able to feed their cattle a product that has already fulfilled one purpose, and in addition the cattle love it too. Boundary Bay also serves Squaw Creek burgers in their restaurant, creating a "full circle burger."
Squaw Creek natural grass fed beef is better for you because it is higher in antioxidants, has higher levels of vitamin E & beta carotene, has more omega 3 fats, less overall fat, and fewer calories. They keep a happy, healthy herd without the use of artificial growth stimulants, hormones or feed based antibiotics. The cattle are slaughtered on site in a humane manner by Island Grown Farmer's Cooperative and all the beef is USDA inspected and approved.
They are passionate about the way they farm and the delicious beef they provide to their community. Squaw Creek Cattle Company is at the Duvall Farmers Market every four weeks, falling on either the third or fourth Thursday.
