1. Establish a set routine for your child to follow at home.  An established routine will help your child follow the structured setting of school more smoothly.

2. Foster a love of reading with your child by reading books with your child whenever possible. Have books available throughout your home. Read your child’s favorite book to them as many times as they like.

3.  Help develop your child’s fine motor skills. Offer opportunities for your child to create a fun craft that involves cutting paper, coloring, and gluing. Children also love to manipulate playdough, which helps to strengthen small hand muscles. Having them create letters and numbers will also help improve their knowledge of the alphabet.

4. Set up simple tasks for your child to follow. Have your child put their dishes in the sink, pick up their toys, and dress themselves. Have them practice zipping and buttoning their clothes.

5. Support your child in taking care of their own bathroom needs. If your child asks for help with their pants, or with wiping, try talking them through it rather than doing it for them. Teach them how to wash their own hands. All of these are essential skills to have in preschool.

6. When tasks are completed, praise your child for their accomplishments. The consistent praise will help to establish a sense of pride and empowerment in your child.

7. Understand that separation anxiety is a natural occurrence with preschool children. Upon arrival, walk with your child to the door, and encourage them to hold your hand instead of carrying them to the door. You can help ease their anxieties by reminding them that you will see them when you pick them up from school. Try not to linger when you are dropping your child off at school. Children pick up on your anxieties, so make the goodbyes short and sweet. Once your child adjusts to preschool, their fears will diminish, and so will yours.
