AUGUST , 2020 UPDATE
Greetings members of District 23!  It has certainly been a HOT summer in the city with high humidity and spectacular storms with tornado warnings.  This will be a very brief update and we welcome 10 new members to North York's RTOERO district.

Your summer edition of the digital STONY Bridges arrived to all of you who subscribe last weekend.  Canada Post deliveries should arrive by the end of this coming week.  It is the largest ever edition of the District 23 magazine and Editor Merv Mascarenhas has done a marvellous job!  There are several pieces contributed by talented members  from North York that you will find very informative, thought provoking or entertaining.

The articles from our Conveners in STONY Bridges indicate the new format designed for activities while we continue to move under the guidance of our governments, public health and the RTOERO Office.  Further updates will continue through this E-Newsletter, to inform you how things will continue to progress in the activities and events planned.

In this update, we are featuring the efforts of the Political Advocacy Committee (PAC) which was submitted by Convener Kathy Shorney
RTOERO is working hard for you with continuing Political Advocacy during these difficult times. We've presented the current activity report as distributed by Martha Foster, Chair.

Political Advocacy on Seniors Issues Continues to be a Focus for RTOERO

by Martha Foster, Chair RTO ERO

Our mission at RTOERO is to improve the lives of our members and all seniors in Canada. One main way we fulfill this mandate is through vigorous advocacy on issues that affect members, seniors and, in fact, all Canadians. This mandate has never been more important than right now.

In June, the board of directors met with representatives from the National Institute on Aging and the International Longevity Centre Canada. The exchange of information and ideas in these meetings was highly informative and productive. RTOERO will partner with both organizations in our future advocacy efforts – to extend and amplify our voice on important issues.

RTOERO supports international rights of older persons

Also in June, we advocated with the federal government regarding the need for Canada to support a United Nations Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.

RTOERO believes that an international legal framework to protect the rights of older persons is an essential component of the difficult work of dismantling systemic ageism and ensuring a more just and fair society for all Canadians as we age.

We know that the Canadian government has expressed openness to the concept of a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons. So, we are asking the Canadian government to publicly commit to a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons and to use its influence to make an international legal human rights framework for older persons a reality.

Governments respond to RTOERO advocacy on long-term care

In April, RTOERO wrote to the federal, provincial and territorial ministers of health, premiers and the prime minister, urging immediate and systemic changes needed to long-term and residential care in Canada.

Most governments have responded with information about current and future actions they are taking. Of interest to many of our members will be the recent announcement by the government of Ontario, as outlined in their response to us.

We are tracking the announcements and actions of governments across Canada on this issue and will continue to vocally support evidence-based policies to improve outcomes for older Canadians.

Hopefully most of us have had the opportunity to explore some similar beautiful sights such as these photos with family and friends this summer.  Continue to be safe, healthy and calm until we gather together  some day in the near future.
