June, 2020 E-Newsletter

Greetings to all of you - our District 23 members!  Some time has passed during this COVID-19 Pandemic since we have been able to gather together to participate  in any of the many activities offered in our District.  We have missed you over the last eleven weeks.  We continue to operate and direct operations under the guidance of RTO ERO, Toronto Public Health as well as Federal and Provincial government policies.

This month, about 200  District 23 members are receiving this E-Newsletter for the first time.  RTO ERO updated all district membership lists in April after the realignment of the group across Canada.  We gained 188 members that we could not previously reach by email.  Welcome to our monthly E-Newsletter!

During this time, our Executive committee continues to meet monthly to seek information about future events and what we could offer our members under the social isolation restrictions.  Several members assisted the Goodwill committee and contacted many of our 80+ years old members by phone, checking on how they were handling social isolation.  The calls were well received and another round may begin in June.

Vernon Paige, renamed his group, the e-Devices Group and introduced members bi-weekly to What's App and Zoom to help participants stay in touch with friends and family.  There will be more information about this found below.

Members of the Needlework and Craft  group met together on Zoom and discussed how their projects were developing and shared ideas for future challenges  to create for the new events once we resume monthly events.  (still to be determined)
Our Book Club met on Zoom to catch up on what everyone was reading and to get some ideas for summer reading. It wasn’t a regular discussion but several books were recommended.

Have-a-Java is always a popular event and convener Liz Clarke has a proposal to "meet" one final time for this year which will be outlined below.

As the weather turns warmer, the sun shines brighter and our isolation restrictions broaden to include another "bubble" of family and friends, we wish you all good health and much enjoyment. Updates will be sent out to inform you of how policy adjustments will impact District 23 on Twitter, Facebook or on our website.  STONY Bridges will be published in late summer/early fall.  More information can be found below.

HAVE - A- JAVA (Quarantine Version)

As a group of coffee lovers in District 23 who gather monthly, we generally meet at Bayview Village.    While in isolation we cannot meet in our group of 20-30 colleagues -- but we would like one more gathering to end this 2019-2020 year in District 23. and we'd like all those interested to join us....

Quarantines are better with friends. Let's hang out virtually during these strange times.  Convener Liz Clarke along with President Maureen Capotosto will host a ZOOM Have -  a -  Java.

When?   Wednesday, June 17th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

BYOCAT (Bring Your Own Coffee And Treat):  You won't be disappointed!😋

Please RSVP by June 15th

E-Devices Group

The recently renamed group has been meeting for the past couple of months on Zoom to explore how to use the program to communicate with family and friends.  They have also learned how to use the What's App program for group chats.

Convener Vern Paige uses a schedule that has group members able to explore things to do on their devices in isolation, learn new programs, explore sites that offer links such as virtual travelling, digital film festivals and even touring world famous zoos like Toronto and San Diego.A great way to tour and see the world with your grandkids!

Those who are interested will continue to meet every 2 weeks, alternate Fridays:
June 12, June 26. July 10 and July 24.

It's a more regular schedule, easier to remember the dates.  Contact Vern if you would like more information.

Questions? Please send me email before Friday.

Contributions to STONY Bridges Requested

All District 23 RTO ERO activities were suspended as of Friday, March 13 under the guidance of the RTO ERO Office.  We will continue to honour the suspension of activities until we are allowed to resume gathering together, as directed for the safety of you, our members.
This is the time of the year when generally we “wrap” up ten months of our community involved in: weekly Bridge matches, monthly Book club discussions, creating Needlework and Crafts, strolling through Toronto neighbourhoods, guest Speakers’ Series, cycling, exploring technology, pole walking, Champagne breakfasts, AGM luncheons, and local trips.  Some of these activities were not possible to finish and some excursions were cancelled to be rescheduled another day.  All, will hopefully be possible adventures when the new guidelines are established in the near future.
As we turn to writing the publication for our next issue of STONY Bridges in August, we would like to invite YOUR voices to contribute to this magazine. These submissions could take on a variety of topics:
  • A short story
  • Poetry
  • Remembrances from days past
  • Gardening Suggestions
  • Living through Covid-19
  • Travel stories
  • Retirement is…
  • Lessons from being a grandparent
  • Photo presentation for a District 23 gallery…
  • Pictures of favourite places to visit…
Send your ideas or ask any questions to:
Maureen Capotosto:
We’ve all had other skills we wanted to try. Give that hidden talent a chance being published in STONY Bridges for your first writing credit.
Deadline for submissions?  Friday, June 12, 2020
