Easy Green Cleaners You Can Make at Home

cleaning suppliesHaving long ago abandoned fancy designer lotions for natural alternatives to keeping my skin healthy and smooth, it occurred to me one day that I ought to likewise banish chemically laden products from my cleaning cabinet.

After all, if you tend the surface of your body with care, why not attend to the myriad surfaces of your home - counter tops, floors, sinks, bathrooms and mirrors – with the same care?

Thankfully, numerous companies now offer “green cleaners.” If you’ve never tried them, check them out. From Whole Foods to Target, most stores have at least some environmentally friendly products – a step in the right direction.

Better yet, you can easily create your own custom cleaning products. Frankly, I was surprised by just how easy – and cost-effective – this is!

And with the addition of essential oils (in lieu of caustic chemicals), cleaning becomes an aromatherapy experience.

Sure, you’re familiar with spring cleaning, but autumn is just as ideal for clearing out clutter and giving your home a real top-to-bottom scrub. After all, as the days shorten and weather turns colder, you’ll be spending more time indoors. Did you know that the EPA reports that indoor environments are two to five times more toxic than outdoor ones?

Naturally, it’s ideal for body, mind and spirit to have a clean and positive environment in which to dwell. Environment affects us. It can stress us out or relax us. It can energize us or exhaust us.

“Healthy people,” said philosopher Ivan Illich, “are those who live in healthy homes on a healthy diet; in an environment equally fit for birth, growth work, healing, and dying.”

The web abounds with tips on creating just such a home, physically and psychologically. Here are a few of the best we’ve seen:

Ch-ch-ch Chocolate Chia Fudge

Remember Ch-ch-cha Chia Pets? Amazingly enough, they’re still going strong. But who knew that their magic ingredient – chia seeds – would turn out to be one of today’s super foods? In fact, they’re loaded with fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and calcium.

They can also be an acquired taste, since once you add liquid, the seeds take on a slightly slimy or gooey texture. But as they say, a little chocolate can make everything better.

This recipe is thicker than I expected. In fact, it’s so delicious, creamy and thick, it qualifies as Ch-ch-ch Chocolate Chia Fudge. Truly, one spoonful is so satisfying and rich that you won’t want much more than that to satisfy your sweet tooth. A perfect vegan dessert!

Recipe adapted from TheIronYou.com. Makes 9 to 12 pieces.

Ingredients

2 ripe avocados

1/3 cup organic honey (or organic agave)

1/3 cup cocoa powder (I use organic, fair trade Tcho cocoa powder.)

3 tbsp. organic extra virgin coconut oil

1 tsp. vanilla extract

½ tsp. chia seeds
 

Directions

Blend all ingredients in a food processor. (If you don’t have a food processor, a blender will do. However, the final mixture is so dense, you’ll need to spoon it out before proceeding.)

Using a trigger melon baller, measure identical portions onto a platter and chill for 4 hours.

Serve individual fudge” truffles” on small plates. Garnish with slivered almonds, chopped pistachios, toasted coconut flakes or sliced organic strawberries. You can also dust lightly with cocoa powder.
