The Rottnest Island Authority offer free WiFi coverage in part of the settlement accommodation areas in Thomson, Longreach and Geordie Bays.
Key hub areas include; The Rottnest Lodge (for Lodge guests only), outside the Visitor Information Centre, on the Grassed Area out of the front of Dome, the Thomson Bay Shopping Mall and the Geordie Bay Shopping Mall.  This coverage does extend out to some moorings close to the beach and along the Ferry Jetty.  The coverage and performance is governed by atmospheric conditions and amount of users.  About 100 metres is the limit from the sundering/receiving pods. View map of coverage.

The busiest weekend of the year is about to occur this coming Saturday 27th.  The RIA expects about 10,000 visitors to the island and 3,000 vessels all looking for prime position to see their relatives and friends compete in this great ocean swim.  The RIA has put a number of strategies in place to manage visitors into the Reserve.  Please be mindful that the focus is to support the swimmers by providing them with a clear and safe passage to the finish line.  With this in mind following the direction of the Rangers and official vessels.  Please visit to view areas you can moor your vessel and visit to view water closures to boating.

Make sure you head to the Heritage Common during the day for loads of family friendly activities including jewellery making, kite building, giant bubble blowing, quokka mask making and much more. There will also be a Food Village in the Main Settlement from 5pm. View our Guide to Race Day Activities.

On this busy day the mobile phone communication system is stretched to its’ maximum capacity and it may not be possible to obtain a mobile connection. The RIA recommend that you make contingency communication plans to stay in touch by making a predetermined meeting point.  In the case of an emergency only please call “000”.

Remember if you cannot find a place to moor your vessel consider using Geordie or Longreach Bay anchorage areas and catch the free shuttle every 30 minutes which departs at the roundabout near the shops. Last bus back to Geordie and Longreach Bays is 8.00pm on Saturday.

On the Sunday following the Karma Resorts Channel Swim there will be short swim for our junior swimmer in North Thomson Bay next to the “Just 4 Fun” swim park.  This swim will run between 9.00am to 10.30am and boaties using Bathurst Beach are asked to take care when transiting past the course.  The course will have float lines and safety vessels will be patrolling the area.  A map showing the course is available at

Rottnest Island continues to move towards a sustainable future by increasing the amount of renewable energy used to create electricity on the Island, and by better integrating the availability of renewable energy with electricity demand.  A grant from the Commonwealth Government through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has made possible the construction of a 600kW solar farm, with associated control systems, energy efficiency improvements, and technologies to better manage demand, including by using excess renewable energy to power the Island’s water desalination plant.
The Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) will be working with Hydro Tasmania to deliver the project.  Construction of a 600kW Solar PV array will commence April 2016 and be located  east of the airport and Government House Lake and west of Bickley Swamp. The 600kW of solar energy will increase the island’s renewable energy generation capacity to 45% by 2016.
