Regional Seminar “Energy Efficiency indicator in the Arab Countries of the Mediterranean Neighborhood”
On 29th of November 2012 in Cairo, RCREEE organized in close cooperation with League of Arab States (LAS) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) a regional Seminar to present the results of the study conducted jointly by RCREEE and Plan Bleu and with EU-MED-ENECII. This study dealt with the Energy Efficiency indicators in the Arab Countries of the Mediterranean Neighborhood. It provides a set of indicators to serve the decision makers in supporting and assessing the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP) as well the mitigation action of GHG. Besides, The seminar focused on the outcomes of the energy situation benchmark among RCREEE member states for the period 2003-2009.  The Event was attended by a number of delegates from League of Arab States, MED-ENEC and Plan Blue as well as delegates from RCREEE member states.

RCREEE in the Saudi Electricity Efficiency Forum
 23-27 November,  RCREEE helped organizing a training workshop in “Energy Management Systems” as well as a Panel Session on the experience of Arab States in Energy Efficiency planning in accordance with the Arab Guideline for improving Electricity Efficiency. The Forum was attended by representatives from European and Arab countries . Also, more almost 500 delegates from Saudi Arabia participated in the event. The main focus of the Forum was the national efforts to improve energy efficiency in the various sectors of the economy including improvements in the buildings sector as nearly 70 % of household electricity consumption is for cooling of buildings.  The Saudi Ministry for Water and Electricity and the recently created National Center for Energy Efficiency presented ambitious plans directed towards efficiency improvements in the electricity sector on the supply and demand side.

Yemen: $20m wind power loan approved
 This week, The government approved a US $20 million loan to help financing a wind power scheme with 60 MG capacity. The scheme was originally planned based on an agreement between OPEC Fund for International Development and the Yemeni government. The project, planned to be sited at Mocha, aims at decreasing country’s dependency on fossil fuels in energy generation with a total costs of nearly $125 million.

Major European support for first large solar project in North Africa
November 2012, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Development Agency for France (AFD), KfW Entwicklungsbank (KfW) and the Moroccan Energy Agency (MASEN) signed a loan grant of € 300m. The loan would cover more than 50% of the total cost of the first phase of the “Ouarzazate solar power complex”project. The project will be the first under the Moroccan Solar Plan and is expected to raise the plant's generation capacity to 500 megawatts by 2020.
