RCREEE in the 1st MSP Working Group Meeting
November 6th 2012, the Mediterranean Solar Plan held its first working group meeting in Berlin on Perspectives for Know-How Transfer and Capacity Development in and with Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Countries. The Know-how transfer and capacity development are considered among the important building blocks up on which the Master Plan for the Mediterranean Solar Plan will be concluded. RCREEE expert Maged Mahmoud participated in the MSP Working Group meeting dedicated to provide inputs on perspectives in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Countries in this regard. He presented RCREEE wide range of capacity development and knoweldge sharing efforts. The meeting was attended by representatives from the European Commission, Moroccan Ministry of Energy, BMU, GIZ, ENEA, Dii, Desertec Foundation, DUN-Desertec University Network, Ptb, ADEME, DLR, RENAC, ICI, and many other organizations and companies active in the RE development field.

Regional Seminar on Energy Efficiency indicators in RCREEE member states 
DESERTEC Industrial Initiative Dii put on hold
Dii First cooperation project between Morocco and EU member states has been put on hold after Spain balked the official agreement signing.  Besides, one of the biggest industrial supporters at the founding stage of the initiative “Bosch” announced its withdrawal from the project few weeks after Siemens backed out. Despite these challenges, Dii officials confirmed that the withdrawal of individual partners doesn’t jeopardize the project instead they are confident that the number of associate partners will rise by the end of the year. Also, Dii CEO Paul van assured his confidence in EU and Morocco negotiators to convince Spain to change its position soon.

PWMSP: Sub regional Workshop on Sustainable Energy Policies
“From Policy Design to Implementation: Experience and Best practice”; this was the theme of the second day of the regional workshop-for Mashreq countries- held in Cairo on the 14th and 15th of November 2012. The workshop was organized by Paving the Way for the Mediterranean Solar Plan (PWMSP) project in cooperation with RCREEE. More than 60 experts from Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Libya and Egypt participated in the workshop to present and discuss the national sustainable energy policies road maps of their countries.

Lebanon:  Global Solar Water Heaters Project
 Under the scope of Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW) major initiative to develop Solar Water Heaters (SWH) market; the ministry raised a new request for proposals for the supply of 1,000 flat-plate solar water heaters. Efforts to develop SWH markets go back to 2009 with “GEF Global Solar Water Heaters Project” undertaken by MEW and UNDP Lebanon and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project aims at increasing SWH installations to 190,000 m2 by 2014.
