BEC monthly newsletter 11/2015

November: It's business time

Why not start a business in Brno? Or at least learn how to do so at our seminar. For fun catch a movie at one of many film festivals. And have a look at our new city map so that you never get lost! In the meantime, don't overdo it with sweets, like they don't in Tanzania.
We will be happy to add them so that all expats know where to go. Whether new here or a local already, have a look at our multi-layered map that has over 70 points of interest so far.

What expats say: Eating sweets is over the top here
You go to work and somebody baked a cake: it’s home-made, you have to try it. When it comes to Christmas, it is even worse. In Tanzania, we only eat sweets on special occassions, says Corona Čermák (33).

Arts scene: Leoš Janáček, Brno's first hipster
Tell the average non-Czech that you live in Brno and you’re likely to get a blank stare, but mention this city to a musician or concert goer and the response is often going to be, “Oh right—Janáček!” You can hear his music in Jenůfa at Janáček Theatre on Nov 7.

At the movies: The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Don't dream it, be it
It isn’t necessarily a queer film. It is about people daring to be different, recognising their innermost desires, and living their dreams. That is a liberating message, whether you’re gay or straight. Showing at Kino Scala as part of Mezipatra on Nov 14.

Food corner: Lokál hero
Svíčková na smetaně or bulls testicles? I decided on the svíčková because it’s the daddy of Czech cuisine, and, seriously, has anyone ever had bulls testicles? Lokál is a great place to get a cold beer and a reliably good bite to eat.

Through Brno: Having a baby!
I ended up reading Pride and Prejudice out loud between contractions. It is hard to know who was suffering more. Read a story on having a baby in Brno, and if you are, in fact, having a baby, check out our infosheet #4.
