Summer greetings from BHee

As the weather gets warmer (and, we hope, dryer) the summer term is the perfect time to run a whole-school 'Eco' day or week and get everybody learning about the environment inside, out in the school grounds, and in our wonderful local green spaces.

Link with one of the dates below, or choose a time that suits your school; the most important thing is to make your event high profile and lots of fun. Why not make the most of Brighton's status as a 'One Planet City' and call your themed day 'One Planet Day'?

We're looking forward to seeing lots of schools at the BHee Eco-Schools conference (see right) and the Wild Beach twilight (see below.) In the meantime, if you need help with any aspect of your Eco-Schools work do get in touch

Wild Beach twilight

25th June, 4 to 5.30pm, Ovingdean beach. Hear how local schools how have used the Wild Beach programme and our amazing marine habitats to inspire pupils and address curriculum objectives. Explore rockpools and enjoy a summer's evening on the beach! More info.

Nocturnal animals

What wildlife is using your school grounds at night? Borrow the BHee infra-red camera and moth trap to find out. Katie will deliver and set them up, and give you simple instructions.

19th to 23rd May

National Walk to School Week is the time to promote the health and 'eco' benefits of walking, scooting and cycling to school. Use your school's Walking Zones Map on your Eco-Schools notice board and in Geography lessons. More info.

International Mud Day

29th June sees children and early childhood professionals all over the world celebrating nature by getting really muddy! More info and instructions for creating your own mud kitchen.

Sussex Festival of Nature

BHee Eco-Schools conference

Wednesday 9th July, Linklater Pavilion, Lewes.

Empty Classroom Day

On 20th June teachers all over the world will be taking their class outside to learn for one lesson. What will you be doing in YOUR school? More info.

Fair Trade film

A great new film with accompanying lesson plans supports children’s learning about global connections and explores issues around the people who grow and make the stuff we buy. It also introduces a Brighton-grown Fair Trade business selling ethical gifts. More info
