"They are not responding to you and we are response-able."
This is some of the most profound and useful advice I’ve ever received. There is too much going on in the other person’s brain: their past, their insecurities, their triumphs, their upsets, their needs to be loved, admired and respected etc. To think that you are what they are responding to is unrealistic, even possibly self-serving. Save yourself some worry and the next time a person treats you with anything but kindness and care remember: they are not responding to you but to something from their past.
Our brains, almost instantly, attach meaning to another’s words and actions. The source of that meaning is not in front of us, but from somewhere in our past, in our memories, be they pleasant or upsetting. If we take Stephen R. Covey’s advice and remember that we are Response-Able, that we can choose our responses to any situation, we will find that we can immediately generate a half-dozen different interpretations of another person’s actions. We, no one else, chooses whether we view an action as thoughtful, careless, disrespectful, funny, arrogant, cooperative, well-intentioned or evil. The motive lives in our minds, not in the actions we are choosing to interpret."
