The North Canton Public Library’s “Explore the World” program for 2014 returns in April, as all departments of the library come together to “explore the world of sustainability.”

The nationally recognized program will, once again, include an exploration guidebook for patrons. The guidebooks will be released during a Sustainability Fair Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. In recognition of Earth month, the fair aims to assist community members in learning about eco-friendly options and sustainable resources available to them.

In 2014, the library will “explore the world” of these subjects: Sustainability, Gardening, Science, Technology, Play, the Civil War, Imagination, Family and Generosity. Partners offering incentives for patron participation include: Ermanno’s Legendary Pizza, the North Canton Garden Club, the Akron ZooHometown ChocolatesSkyMax Trampoline ArenaTomTod Ideas and ChoreChaser. As an added incentive this year, patrons who complete guidebook activities at least eight of the nine months will be entered to win an iPad Mini.

north canton city schools parent literacy training

Join us Monday, April 14 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

In this fourth installment of parent literacy nights for parents of children grades K-2 in the North Canton City Schools, the library will demonstrate iPad literacy apps for the parents so that they can utilize this technology when they are at the library or at home.  The Walsh pre-service teachers will present storytelling for the children.

Parents must register to attend in advance with the North Canton City Schools by eMailing Angela at ams1nc@northcantonschools.org.

The North Canton City Schools, North Canton Public Library and Walsh University submitted a joint application to receive an Early Literacy and Reading Readiness Grant from the Ohio Department of Education. The North Canton consortium was selected to receive the grant, which provides an opportunity for districts and community schools to pursue funding from a pool of $13 million. In total, 248 applications were submitted throughout Ohio with 91 being selected to receive funding.
