With just over 10 years to go to achieve the SDGs, more than 80 science funders - representing international development aid agencies, private foundations and national research councils - agreed to accelerate and amplify the impact of their investments in international science. The ISC made the case for scientific knowledge from across all disciplines at the UN High-level Political Forum, the United Nations' central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The ISC took part in the 2019 World Conference of Science Journalists, which brought together hundreds of science journalists from across the world to discuss the state of science journalism as a profession, and new frontiers for science reporting. ISC Special Envoy for Science in Global Policy, Flavia Schlegel, spoke during a lunchtime panel event on 'Championing science engagement and inclusivity for everyone, everywhere'. The Technical Working Group on Sendai Hazard Definitions and Classification, co-facilitated by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the International Science Council, is tasked with developing new hazard definitions and classifications, and seeks input from ISC members to ensure the list is robust, and reflects the full spectrum of local and regional terminology. The Global Young Academy is currently seeking applications for membership from young scholars who combine the highest level of research excellence with a demonstrated passion for delivering impact. The call is open to all scholars working in any research-based discipline, including the sciences, medicine, engineering, social sciences, the arts and humanities. Applicants should be in the early to middle years of their independent careers. The majority of the Academy's members are aged 30-40 and the typical period from completion of a PhD or similar degree is 3-10 years. Applicants falling outside these ranges are still invited to send their applications with a justification for why they should be considered.
The deadline for application is 15 September 2019.

United Nations September Summits - Meet and Greet opportunities

Will you or your representatives be in New York in September for the 73rd UN General Assembly, Climate Action Summit or the High Level Political Forum SDG Summit? ISC President, Daya Reddy, ISC CEO Heide Hackmann and ISC Special Envoy for Science in Global Policy Flavia Schlegel will be attending meetings during 21 - 23 September. The global astronomical community was behind the largest coordinated Moon landing anniversary action worldwide, with more than 120 listing events to celebrate the historic milestrone as part of the IAU (International Astronomical Union) 'Under One Sky' project.

Royal Society Te Apārangi (New Zealand) has recently released a summary of expert advice on plastics and their effect on the environment and human health, such as the shocking estimate that suggests that the world’s population is using up to 600 million plastic bags each hour. If all of these bags were tied together, they could be wrapped around the planet seven times. Read the latest thinking here
 
News from our Regional Offices

The Regional Office for Africa convened the 5th meeting of the African Future Earth Committee (AFEC) in July 2019. The meeting brainstormed on and formulated an African Future Earth strategy, and prepare a concrete action plan with short-, medium- and long-term deliverables on activities in various domains including capacity building, research, practice, infrastructure, among other issues.  The meeting also identified tasks that are of high priority for the Future Earth community on the continent and explored avenues on how best AFEC can work together with Future Earth Global Secretariat and the Future Earth Regional Office as well as other stakeholders on the continent to mobilise resources for Future Earth activities in Africa.

From 20-25 July, the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific together with the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Reduction International Centre of Excellence - Taipei co-organized a Training Course on landslide investigations and hazards mitigation for early-career researchers at  the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Vietnam. Thirty-six participants from various universities, ministerial agencies and institutions from Vietnam heard invited lecturers on dealing with disasters, particularly landslides, debris flow and earthquakes.

INGSA Asia in collaboration with the Malaysian Ministries of Health and Education and ISC ROAP will organize a capacity building workshop on 13th – 14th August 2019 in Kuala Lumpur. The theme of the workshop is “Science Advice and Non-Communicable Diseases”.  Later in the month, together with the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Reduction International Centre of Excellence - Nepal National Society for Earthquake Technology (IRDR ICOE-NSET), ISC ROAP will connect with a number of Nepalese government agencies and ministries, The aim is to explore Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) programmes and initiatives in Nepal. In addition to meeting with government stakeholders, ISC ROAP will also meet with researchers and will organize a sharing seminar to introduce the ISC's priorities and opportunities to get involved to support the DRR agenda in the region. 

Looking ahead to September, ISC ROAP will participate in the CODATA 2019 conference in Beijing, organizing a Plenary session on FAIR and Open Data policies in Asia and the Pacific Region, with panellists from Australia, China, India, Korea and Malaysia.
