Mark Making and the Elusive Spirit
(Purple Giraffes & Other Ephemera)

One year ago (May 20, 2016) Still Point Gallery had the honor of hosting Cherie Lesnick’s first solo show in Cleveland, (Mind, Myth & Music), a stunningly beautiful and psychologically compelling exhibit that resonated with a wide audience and excellent sales. At the urging of customers and the gallery alike, Cherie has agreed to hold another exhibit this year with an opening reception Friday, May 12th, (6:00 - 8:00 p.m), entitled Mark Making and the Elusive Spirit. Her new show echoes themes from her first, again emphasizing the power of marks to animate, endow meaning and at times to achieve transcendence. Within these works of watercolor and mixed media, some of them relatively small (e.g. 8" x 8"), her paintings exhibit a remarkable capacity and range, from satire to whimsy, as she engages us in the abiding and earnest questions of mind and body, spirit and matter.

Cherie received her BFA degree from Detroit's "Center for Creative Studies", as well as a MA degree in Psychology and a BFA in Theatre from Wayne State University.  She has been a recipient of various awards for her art, including a DSWPS Scholarship from the prestigious
Detroit Society of Women Painter's and Sculptors and a 1st and 3rd place winner at the Michigan SF Competition. Cleveland is the beneficiary of Cherie's relocation from her native Michigan where her very popular work sold in galleries around the state. The exhibit will open with a reception Friday, May 12th (6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) and will run through Saturday, June 21st.

We encourage everyone to take a few moments to read Cherie's personal statement, "IN HER OWN WORDS" (see below) ...  trenchant observations and insight on the thoughts and themes that motivate the artist, and a beautiful, gentle and loving tribute to her son.

Please join us for the opening of a remarkable show that resumes what we hope will become a tradition with Cherie each year.
"IN HER OWN WORDS"

It is an ongoing search for how spirit can be made visible that drives my work. How can a single mark seem to have energy? Just to see this phenomenon yourself, draw a line using a ruler. Now draw a line quickly without a ruler. Compare the two lines.

It is through mark making and a fascination with the various energies of colors - and the juxtaposition of these colors - that sometimes enables me to capture on paper (or canvas) the elusive spirit embodied in the animate and inanimate.

A strong background in art history has exposed me to many artists who have influenced my work, including the Impressionists (e.g. Van Gogh, Cezanne) and the Blue Rider Expressionists (e.g. Gabriel Munter, Paul Klee). I am also fascinated by the art of children (before they have been "taught") and the art of "primitive" and prehistoric cultures. All of the above have one thing in common - their work is as fresh today as it was when they painted it. They have all captured that much elusive spirit - a vitality that transcends time.

Although mark making sometimes captures the transient and ephemeral nature of life, sometimes life itself is evanescent and ephemeral. I am honored to dedicate this show to my son, Peter Spencer, who died on March 4, 2017. The gentle, yet enduring, marks he made on this world were through his kindness, compassion and love.

(The quest for a purple giraffe was an ongoing bit of humor between us from his early childhood continuing through his adulthood).
