OUR VERY OWN NOTRE DAME FACULTY SUPERSTAR

Amy Coney Barrett was Executive Editor of the Notre Dame Law Review and graduated summa cum laude from Notre Dame Law School in 1997.  Upon graduation, she clerked for Judge Laurence Silberman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court.  She stayed in D.C. after her clerkships to practice law at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin and Baker Botts.  While she enjoyed practice, she had always been interested in entering the legal academy.  In 2002, Amy returned to Notre Dame as a member of the law faculty.  She teaches a wide range of courses, including Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Evidence, and Federal Courts.  She received tenure in 2008 and was promoted to the rank of full professor in 2010. Her work has been published in leading journals such as the Columbia, Cornell, and Texas Law Reviews.  Since 2010, she has served by appointment of Chief Justice John Roberts as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure.  Amy married Jesse Barrett (NDLS ’99), who was the Editor-in-Chief of Volume 74.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

William Pauls
William Pauls graduated from Notre Dame Law School in 2003.  After graduating, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Mary Ann Cohen of the United States Tax Court in Washington, DC, and also received his LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated with distinction.  William joined Sutherland Asbill & Brennan in 2005 and has been a member of Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group ever since.  William’s practice focuses on corporate tax matters, and he regularly advises clients with respect to the structuring of corporate reorganizations, stock and asset acquisitions and dispositions, spin-offs, split-offs, and other corporate separations, cross-border transactions, and corporate finance transactions, and the application of the consolidated return regulations.  He also has substantial experience with insurance company tax matters, including structuring and implementing captive insurance company arrangements, the federal tax consequences of reinsurance transactions, and complex international insurance tax issues.  William was promoted to Counsel in 2011 and Partner in 2014.

William married another graduate of Notre Dame Law School – Tamara (Dugan) Pauls – in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in 2005.  He and his wife and their daughter Sarah reside in McLean, Virginia.  William found his love of tax law with the help of his wife and the courageous faculty of the Law and Business Schools, which afforded him the opportunity to take eight outstanding tax law classes in the shadow of the Golden Dome.
Julie LaEace
Julie LaEace is the Associate Director for Kirkland & Ellis LLP’s global pro bono program.  After graduating from Notre Dame Law School in 1998, she specialized in employment litigation and employee benefits at two large Chicago law firms before transitioning to law firm management.  Prior to joining Kirkland, LaEace focused on business development at Baker & McKenzie.  She serves on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and is a member of the Chicago Bar Foundation’s Advisory Committee on Training and Professional Development in Legal Aid.  She graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame Law School, where she was an articles editor for the Notre Dame Law Review, and graduated summa cum laude from Indiana University, where she received a B.S.
