Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure and excitement that Hope Acts welcomes Eliodor Leite  as our  Program and Resident Assistant!
Originally from Angola, Eliodor has given his time and talents as a volunteer since the winter of 2018. We are delighted to officially welcome him to our staff. An eloquent, multilingual speaker and teacher, Eliodor has already contributed so much to HHELP (Hope House English Language Program) and to ASAP (our new Asylum Seeker Assistance Program). He also has a wicked sense of humor!

I hope that those of you who are in the area will stop by and say hello to Eliodor. In just a few minutes of conversation, I think you'll agree that he is a great addition to our Hope Acts family.

With gratitude,

Martha Stein
Executive Director

PS - Thank you to our many new and long-time supporters. Your financial contributions to Hope Acts provide housing, classes and critically needed social support for asylum seekers. If you haven't contributed recently, please consider making a gift today: https://hopeacts.org/give/. THANK YOU!

A night on the town!

A HUGE thank you to our friends at UNUM for donating a block of seats at the Portland Expo Building to watch Portland's very own Red Claws! Residents, students, volunteers, and friends were treated to an evening of fun cheering for the Red Claws in their 99-98 last-minute win!  Thank you, UNUM for your continued support of Hope Acts and the larger immigrant community.

Songs of Hope Lifted our Spirits

Our thanks to social justice chorus Women in Harmony, for making Hope Acts your community partner for January's "Songs of Hope" concert.  Our residents, Board members and friends who attended were so moved by the powerful songs (yes, there were some teary eyes in our group!). We also appreciate the many chorus and audience members who visited with us at intermission, donated to Hope Acts and signed up for our newsletter or to volunteer. Thank you so much!

Hope Acts joins Project HOME

Hope Acts is glad to announce that we have been accepted as a partner organization of Project HOME, a program of Portland's new Quality Housing Coalition.

Finding affordable, quality rental housing in the Greater Portland area is a huge challenge for most people with limited income. But most asylum seekers face additional hurdles in securing a place to live: they are automatically excluded from consideration for rental apartments because they don't have a rental history, a credit score or list of references to include on a rental application. Project HOME provides an opportunity for New Mainers to access quality housing by partnering with organizations like Hope Acts and local landlords. For more information:  http://qualityhousingcoalition.org.
The Quality Housing coalition supports and creates quality housing opportunities through education and philanthropy in Portland, Maine.

Hope House's Asylum Seeker Assistance Program (ASAP)
Monday - Thursday afternoons.

Asylum seekers looking for one-on-one help are invited to Hope House for support. We can help with housing and job applications, accessing medical resources, transportation, etc. (We cannot assist with asylum applications or legal issues). No appointment needed. French and Portuguese translation provided.

14 Sherman Street, 12-3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Here's a really easy way to help Hope Acts!  Would you CLYNK for us?  If you would be willing to turn your recyclables into a donation for Hope Acts (in Maine -- bottles and cans that include a deposit), send an email to martha@hopeacts.org with your mailing address and we'll send you a few bar-coded bag stickers. Put the sticker on a CLYNK bag, fill and return the bag to a participating Hannaford supermarket.  THANK YOU.

Thank you, in advance, for your financial support of Hope Acts. Your donation today provides housing, classes, and a sense of community for immigrants, allowing them to achieve their goals for a successful future.
