Have your say on the future
of Wirral Council services

Dear Resident

I’m sure you are aware that Councils across the country are facing major cuts in funding. The Government is continuing to reduce the amount of money Councils are able to spend on services. These cuts are falling more and more on deprived, northern areas such as Wirral. While we fiercely believe these cuts to be both disproportionate and unfair, we have no choice but to implement them.

For the next financial year, Wirral Council needs to make savings of £27.5 million. This week I have published a series of options for how that money could be saved and now we need to know what you think.

These are tough times – for our staff, Councillors, and most importantly the people that we serve. We have some extremely tough decisions to make over the coming months. To refuse to make the savings demanded of us would mean setting an illegal budget, which would ultimately result in the wholesale closure of services – putting thousands of vulnerable people at very real risk.

The public consultation on these budget options opened yesterday, September 16th, and closes on December 6th. Our engagement staff will today begin the process of attending or organising more than 200 events over a 12-week period. The first few weeks of the event schedule can be found on the Council website and will be regularly updated.

If you are aware of a community organisation or group in your area that you would want the team to visit then please do not hesitate to e-mail engage@wirral.gov.uk and we will arrange it. My pledge to you is that I will consult with staff, residents, community, voluntary and faith groups and businesses so that we can make these tough decisions together.

I urge you to work with us and let us have your views.

Graham Burgess
Chief Executive, Wirral Council
