Dispatch from the Future
June 2014 Newsletter // by Ian MacKenzie

Dear <<First Name>>,

Rumi says: “Today I wake up empty and frightened."

Sunlight streams through the curtains, the roar of engines in the distance, while footsteps of the tenants above gather towards their day.  I'm weary with the promise that it all might mean something. Doubt whispers in my ear.

"Don’t go to the door of the study and read a book."

I reach for my iPhone, a pang of guilt stays my hand. Should I leap so readily into that cacophony of thoughts? The addictive hit of dopamine has always promised to fill the void - but we both know it never does.  I'm adrift in directions, all of them led by intellect.

"Instead, take down the dulcimer, let the beauty of what you love be what you do."

I sit on the edge of the bed, while two felines sleep sweetly beside me. My camera gear lays strewn about the floor, hastily unpacked after a redeye return. Memory cards. Lenses. Tripod. Laptop. Another film to edit. Another offering to place at Her feet.

"There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the ground, there are a thousand ways to go home again."

I think: they never tell you the awakened heart is burden.  But let me tell you: in love is the only way to live.

RECOMMENDED CAMPAIGN: A NEW DAWN FOR TULLAUN CASTLE

Crowdfund the restoration of an actual castle in Ireland. From the campaign:

"Tullaun castle, also known locally as The Black Castle, is a magnificent 16th century fortified tower house built by the O'Kennedy clan, who were the ruling Gaelic Chieftains in this part of Tipperary, around 1550.

Derelict and abandoned, my husband Kevin and I bought Tullaun castle in 2007 and this makes us its custodians for this brief period in its history. We are passionate and committed to the restoration and preservation of this building and would like to offer you a unique opportunity to join us on our restoration journey, help make history and leave behind a lasting legacy."

FROM THE ARCHIVES: WHY VEGETARIANISM WILL NOT SAVE THE WORLD

"There is no death-free option. The only options we have are the death that’s a part of the cycle of life and the death that’s destroying the cycle of life." - Lierre Keith

Certainly one of my most interesting interviews I've ever conducted, this discussion with ex-vegan Lierre Keith was also the most controversial. The response provoked over 190+ comments, ranging from positive to outraged.  Since it was published in 2011, I've found a clear kinship in the perspective of my current teacher Stephen Jenkinson, who speaks of grief and indebtedness.
