Hospital Spotlight: Mary Greeley Medical Center

This past month MGMC's VTE improvement story was shared with the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). MGMC has demonstrated its commitment to patient safety by utilizing a venous thromboembolism risk assessment tool for all adult inpatient and observation admissions.  This risk assessment is conducted by the admitting nurse and documented in the electronic medical record.  Based on the risk assessment score, the physician is notified electronically, via a “Best Practice Alert,” if no venous thromboembolism prophylaxis has been ordered.  Click here to see the improvement made in MGMC's VTE run chart...

  • Keynote presentation is Kathy Duncan, RN, Faculty, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), on SSIs and Pressure Ulcers. Kathy is co-leader of IHI's National Learning Network and coordinates the Improvement Map support care processes. Previously she co-led the 5 Million Lives Campaign National Field Team and was faculty for the Improving Outcomes for High Risk and Critically Ill Patients Innovation Community. Ms. Duncan was responsible for the Prevention of Pressure Ulcers and Deployment of Rapid Response Teams content areas for the 5 Million Lives Campaign. The two breakout tracks on Hospital Acquired Conditions and Readmissions will feature presentations on SSI, Falls, ADEs and care coordination.

Stroke Registry Educational Offering: Coverdell Learning Community 

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), along with its collaborating partners at the University of Iowa College of Public Health and the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative (IHC),  received funding to support and strengthen the improvement of  acute stroke treatment and outcomes through the guidance of the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program (PCNASP).  Program activities will address the continuum of care from onset of stroke, through EMS response, hospital entry and discharge. The Learning Community sessions will be used to understand quality improvement tools, and provide the healthcare providers with opportunities to plan system responses for their regions of Iowa regarding efforts to improve triage and transport of stroke patients to improve care.

There is no cost to attend the Coverdell Learning Community. REGISTER HERE. The educational event will be held at the Genesis West Campus in the Conference Center in Pavilion 2 at 1401 W Central Park, Davenport. Further directions will be sent before the event.
