Hospital Spotlight: Grinnell Regional Medical Center

In January 2008 Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) Nurse Manager, Sheryl Baarda read a publication from ACOG defining a nationally recognized standard of excellence to promote quality and consistent care for maternity patients seeking elective induction or c-section. Sheryl discussed it with the physician who was the OB Physician Committee chair at that time and they later presented it to all the physicians who delivered babies.  After unanimous approval that should be the standard of practice at GRMC, they implement a new policy that stated elective inductions of labor or scheduled Cesarean sections would not be performed prior to 39 weeks, 0 days unless medical indications for induction were present. Continue reading Grinnell's EED spotlight story...

IHC Awarded Grant to Spread the Choosing Wisely Campaign

The ABIM Foundation announced 21 recipients of grants to regional health collaboratives, medical specialties, and specialty societies to extend the Choosing Wisely campaign.  IHC was awarded the two year grant to further advance the campaign across Iowa, made possible through generous support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Choosing Wisely campaign promotes the crucial conversations between physicians and patients about overuse of medical tests and procedures.  National organizations representing medical specialties identified tests or procedures commonly used in their field where the necessity should be questioned.  Click here for more information and additional linked resources.
