Falls Community of Practice

The IHC HEN Falls Community of Practice (CoP) is a newly designed educational model that began in HEN 2.0. Monthly webinars are offered, highlighting best practices, hospital successes, as well as innovative approaches to fall prevention. All CoP events are recorded and posted to the IHC website as well as the IHC HEN-HUB for future viewing.

Participating hospitals have taken the initiative to look beyond simple incidence of falls, exploring root causes of falls. Hospitals have also looked to expand falls prevention teams, making falls prevention a priority and responsibility for all staff members, regardless of clinical function or operational level. The importance of environmental assessments, particularly during seasonal changes or periods of construction, redesign, or high traffic, have also been identified as additional opportunities for intervention based off lessons learned.

The original goal of the Falls CoP was to reduce aggregate falls by 10%. As of June 2016 the highly successful Falls CoP group has reduced aggregate fall incidence by 29%.

IHC encourages the participation of not only quality staff, but also front line staff, as well as promoting the inclusion of unit champions. The education plan for the CoP is comprised of several interactive webinars, includes Medication Safety, Lean, Person and Family Engagement, and best practice dissemination. Additional topics will focus on areas identified by CoP members as barriers to fall prevention and/or emerging recommendations or priorities.

If you are interested in participating in future Falls CoP events please contact Jennifer Creekmur at creekmurj@ihconline.org.
