Hospital Spotlight: Alegent Creighton Health

Alegent Creighton Health System has demonstrated their commitment to patient safety and leading transformation through implementing a system-wide “hard stop” policy for non-medically indicated EEDs prior to 39 weeks in 2013.  The Hospital Engagement Network’s recent spotlight on EED’s has ultimately raised the standard of care and best practice in OB care. In 2012, the Nebraska and Iowa based system began to lay the groundwork of implementing a system-wide policy. Click here to check out the progress hospitals in the system have made so far...

Join VHA's Partnership for Patients Education Series as national expert Dr. Michael Marcotte, along with our VHA EED reduction expert, Dr. Peggy Naas, discuss their experience working with obstetricians, nurses, and hospital administrators across the country tasked with meeting this challenge. We'll discuss the foundational components of effective EED reduction programs, as well as identify the barriers to apply evidence-based tactics that reduce or eliminate EED in hospitals. This article, featured in the MMIC Spring Issue of Brink, describes the research and builds the case on what can be done for non-medically indicated early elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks.  This is ultimately raising the standard of healthcare and provides a case for what is right for physicians.  Click here to read the article.  

Educational Video: The Heart.org Clot Blog - VTE Risk Increases in Women who Smoke
Important data from the Million Women Study  in the UK shows that women who smoke have a 40% higher risk of VTE than nonsmokers. The risk is further compounded by surgery. Check out the educational video here.

Toolkit: Minnesota Safer Care Road Map
This document which is attached provides evidence-based recommendations/standards for Minnesota hospitals in the development of a comprehensive patient safety program which includes key patient safety practices in the areas of pressure ulcers, falls, wrong procedures, adverse drug events, hospital-acquired infections, perinatal safety, readmissions, controlled substances, and overall safety culture.  It was put together with the participation of their critical access hospitals.
