Perinatal Emergency Protocols:
Survey Results

The Iowa Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) has 83 birthing hospitals participating in the initiative. Participating hospitals focus on reducing early elective deliveries (EEDs), eclampsia and obstetric hemorrhage.  In March 2014, birthing hospitals were asked to evaluate the structure of their current practices for obstetrical care, focusing on current perinatal emergency protocols and response practices.  Interested in viewing the results? Please follow this link.
Actions You Can Start Now to Reduce Obstetrical Adverse Events:
  1. Use a collaborative approach by partnering with national and state organizations like, The Joint Commission, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), and March Of Dimes.
  2. Consider making maternal safety areas a priority. Examples of areas: OB Hemorrhage, Preeclampsia/Hypertension, and/or Prevention of VTE in Pregnancy
  3. Use key resources to support standardized practices and standardized measures. Click this link to view some of the key resources available online.
  4. Create a multidisciplinary work-group to include: physician champion(s), OB leaders, nurses and others.
  5. Develop a system-wide toolkit for implementation:
    • Using a template policy to include early identification and treatment guidelines
    • Using educational materials
    • Performing regular audits for compliance
    • Emphasizing accountability system-wide
    • Emphasizing patient involvement: An educated patient is of tremendous value.
