Patient Safety Conference Line Up:

This year's Patient Safety Conference will feature a presentation by Allison Massari. Our keynote speaker, Allison Massari knows that you have the power to transform lives. She has been a medical patient and educator, and understands health care intimately. As a burn survivor she draws on her personal experiences with empathetic devoted healthcare workers. It's a passionate story of finding the internal strength and commitment for hope to flourish - and to inspire the collaboration of teams of medical personnel to profoundly demonstrate the power of authentic patient-provider relationships.

IHC will present the 2014 Patient Safety Awards to the health care providers or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership and achievement n patient safety. This award honors patient safety champions who support initiatives that improve patient
safety, reduce the risk of harm and keep patients at the center of care. The award winners will share their stories on their improvement work in patient safety, beginning with overall winner Lakes Regional Healthcare.

Bonnie Andrews of Penrose St. Francis Health Services in Colorado will  explore the topic of “just culture” and how this practice supports patient advocacy and ultimately patient safety. Patients trust that their health care providers are doing the right thing. A just culture acts to promote the caregiver avoiding risky behaviors. As we expect and support those behaviors that promote safety, we act to protect patients from harm, truly functioning as patient advocates.  The day will close with the nationally-recognized speaker Steve Siemens challenging participants "If it isn't broken, break it!"

Following this hospital best practice, Marty Hatlie, CEO of Project Patient Care in Chicago, will share emerging ways patient advocates are contributing to organizational culture change and the patient safety movement. He will describe ways healthcare teams can engage family caregivers to manage risk and achieve safe treatment outcomes.

In the afternoon, HEN participants will discuss sense making of data variation by using run charts. Followed by breakout tracks on Patient & Family Engagement, Obstetrics, and Hospital-Acquired Conditions.
