Season Influenza Update:
What You Need to Know

The 2014-2015 flu season has been busy with levels of reported influenza cases reaching epidemic proportions in the United States.  Elevated flu activity has been reported in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.  While periods of epidemic-like activity are not uncommon during flu season, the increased risk for hospitalizations and death are reasons to increase awareness and prevention efforts.  The proportion of adult deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza for the week ending January 10th was 8.5% above the 7.0% epidemic threshold, an increase from 7.2% the prior week. 1  Forty-five pediatric influenza-associated deaths have been reported thus far this season, including two deaths in Iowa. 1  To date, there have been a total of 8,199 laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations reported since October 1, 2014.1
