NEW IN - JACK KILJAN 1970s NYC REELS

New York in the late 70s was a seminal time for the city and Jack Kiljan’s latest 8mm reels manage to capture so much of what was happening at that time. As in his footage of London during the same period, Kiljan painstakingly records signs and awnings. He concentrates on the wide array of adult and regular cinema fronts that populate Times Square, capturing the seedy atmosphere of the 70s as well as the dawning of the blockbuster age. There is also incredible footage of Harlem during a heat wave, performers in Washington Square Park and flashy roller skaters in a graffitied up Central Park!

REMEMBERING - VIETNAM ANNIVERSARIES

50 years ago in 1963, what was going to be described as the Vietnam War, escalated as Ngo Dinh Diem, president of South Vietnam was assassinated. The next year in the wake of Kennedy’s assassination after two incidents on the Gulf of Tonkin, recently inaugurated president, Lyndon B. Johnson allowed open warfare to commence under the auspice that they were supporting South-eastern Asian countries endangered by communist aggression. Fighting would continue for another decade, officially ending in 1975 with troops beginning to withdraw 40 years ago this year, in 1973. In the Clips & Footage archive we have an array of colour footage from that decade of conflict so important in American and Vietnamese history.

So we’re nearly at the Easter break and we hope you’re all looking forward to a lovely four days off however you plan to spend it. At the Clips & Footage office it’s pretty unanimous that our holidays will involve a lot of chocolate and just in case you haven’t got into the spirit check out our blog post on the 1950s Mars bar factory from Greenpark film ‘A Matter of Taste’. This beautiful 50s colour film shows chocolate bar production during its most innocent and glorious years, before we worried about ‘saturated fat’ and ‘bad sugars’!

AND FINALLY, CONGRATULATIONS...

....to Les Rowley, who won cinema tickets in our last newsletter competition. Keep your eyes peeled for more fantastic competitions in the future.

Wishing you a Happy Easter break
