In 2007, Housing America was created and October was designated as the annual month for NAHRO and its members to collectively raise awareness of the need for, and the importance of, safe, decent and affordable housing in quality communities. Events are held around the country by housing authorities, redevelopment agencies and government entities to spotlight the great works that have been done and the successes that so many residents have experienced. Sadly, there continues to be an unmet housing need for many of America's most vulnerable.  Visit for examples of what NAHRO members have done to recognize and celebrate Housing America Month.
Mental Health Month
Mental Health Month is a time to educate yourself on the conditions that those with mental disorders live with. A little understanding can go a long way towards helping these individuals live an open and meaningful life, and feel welcome and loved among their friends and families. You can volunteer at local clinics and aid the entire community by providing much-needed assistance to these organizations. If nothing else, a simple donation to one of the organizations who work to champion the research and treatment of these conditions can go a long way. Don’t let Mental Health Month go by without broadening your understanding of the challenges of mental illness. For more information and resources on Mental Health Month Visit:
Family History Month
It all starts with collecting what you know about your family and compiling it together. If you’re lucky like we are you’ll have a family member who had a passion for genealogy and will have started the footwork for you. If not, its time you hit the books! Some websites and organizations can help you trace your family line, including using DNA samples to help identify unknown relatives! Who knows how big your family is? Family History Day encourages you to find out!
Fire Prevention Month

Here are some ways that you can participate in Fire Prevention Month: Develop a fire escape plan with everyone in your household and practice it at least twice a year. Test your smoke alarms once a month and replace the batteries if they need to be replaced or call 800-378-9366 and Excel Can replace them for you. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what they should do if they hear one. Make sure all household members know two ways to escape from every room. Establish a family meeting spot outside. You can also help others understand these tips by sharing this holiday on your favorite social media websites using the hashtag #firepreventionmonth.
