WORLD PREMIERE OF ‘CANTATA FOR THE SEASONS' AT ALDEBURGH
13th April 2014
17:30 - Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Aldeburgh
Ipswich Choral Society marks its 190th Anniversary with the world première of a newly commissioned work, 'Cantata for the Seasons' by composer Stevie Wishart, written as a homage to Benjamin Britten
"Britten is one of those composers who has been a formative influence in my vocal writing. Growing up in East Anglia, I attended master-classes at Snape as a child, and so fell under the Snape/Britten spell. I also adore the open landscapes of Suffolk - again childhood haunts - and so look to this landscape for inspiration.” - Stevie Wishart

NEW ORCHESTRAL CO-COMMISSION
2014/2015 will see the premiere of a new work by Stevie Wishart written for double bass and period orchestra: 'Concerto à Double Entendre' is a new work co-commssioned by the Orchestra of the Age on Enlightenment for its principal bass player Chi-chi Nwanoku, and by The Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, artistic director Harry Christophers, for its principal bass player Rob Nairn.
The concerto, unusually, puts the double bass centre stage, in a piece inspired by the baroque concerto grosso. Here the principal double bassist plays in the two concertino groups, one soave (smooth), the other ruvido (rough), with the rest of the orchestra as ripieno.
