“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26)

The Purpose of Pentecost by Peter Wade
It may come as a surprise to some Christians that the main purpose of the Day of Pentecost was not to make speaking in tongues available to believers. The experience was certainly part of the package, as is clearly seen in Acts chapter 2, but when Jesus taught his disciples about what was about to happen, only once did he mention speaking in a “new tongue”(Mark 16:17) and that was on the day of his Ascension. I speak in tongues, as do millions of Christians, and I encourage others to do so, but this experience is not the “be all and end all” of the Christian life.

Acts 10:38 sums up the ministry of Jesus: “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” At Pentecost, God anointed the believers with the same spirit and power (Luke 24:49), so they could go about doing good and healing the sick, for they knew God was with them.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth…” (John 14:16-17).  “Another” here means another of the same kind, not different but similar. KJV uses the word “Comforter” and the Amplified Bible adds “Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby.”

Celebrate Pentecost With Poetry

The Apostles at Jerusalem
were not to go elsewhere,
Jesus had told them to tarry
ՙtil Godʼs Spirit filled them there.

Not as gentle as the dove
when the Holy Spirit came
But as a mighty rushing wind,
with descending tongues of flame.

Then they spoke with other tongues
as the Spirit gave words to say,
speaking wonderful works of God,
confusing the people that day.

There were many different nations
gathered to hear what Peter said,
when he spoke of Jesus' death,
His resurrection from the dead.

Many mocked, said he was drunk
but three thousand believed that day,
those were baptized in water
as their sins were washed away.

Pentecost, the birth of the church
now had power for Christian living.
Believe, be filled with the Spirit
and celebrate with thanksgiving.

"We Want Another Pentecost" By Peter Wade

I learned an essential lesson as a young Christian, and that was not to take my theology from hymns or praise and worship songs, but only from the Bible. For example, in the denomination in which I was brought up, we sang, "Give us the promised Holy Ghost; We want another Pentecost, Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!" Are you sure “We want another Pentecost?” I don’t think so.

The Holy Spirit By R.A. Torrey

“I recall the exact spot where I was kneeling in prayer in my study.  It was a quiet moment, one of the most quiet moments I ever knew.

Happy Birthday, Church! By Peter Wade

To the majority of Christians, Pentecost is the birthday of the church, and because of the momentous events of that day, one of which was the speaking in languages not learned, it cannot be ignored. It must be accepted or explained whatever church you might belong to.

Perfect for

Pentecost Sunday!

Peter Wade's new book...

Impact : Pentecost and the Early Church  -- It's the exciting story of Pentecost as you've never witnessed it before! The events of the early church as you've never experienced them!

The Apostles were suddenly “thrown in at the deep end,” having witnessed the death of their leader, his resurrection, and then on the day of his ascension, his command to stay in the city until they received “power from on high.” They knew that something would happen, but had no details or accurate grasp of the IMPACT that this promised event would have on them – or on humanity!
