The 2ND printing of our translation of Capo Ferro's work has arrived. Check out the Swordsman shop website for more information on this book.
The shop also sells a variety of fencing prints, instructional DVDs and small-sword trainers. You may want to mention that to friends and family for the Holiday season.
Cultivating the Duelist Mentality
Baron Cesar de Bazencourt
The Secrets of the Sword
- A sharp point is a peremptory fact, which makes short work of illusions…
- First and foremost, your invariable rule must be: Distrust your enemy; never be over confident.
- No knowledge of fencing can make a man invulnerable. If anyone imagines that he is an exception to the rule he betrays a singularly misplaced confidence in his own power, a very dangerous error.
- In every art proficiency can only be obtained by persistent and intelligent application. Practice alone makes perfect.
- The moment you think you have made a hit, for you may be mistaken, get back as smartly as you can, and be ready to go on fighting.
Of particular note in this image is how this gentlemen wears his sword on his baldric hanging low on his hip. This gives him easy access to his weapon which can be drawn from its scabbard and brought into action within a blink of an eye. He also carries a very handy yet elegant cane which is a weapon in its own right.
There will come a time when we will be drawn to a far away place by an irresistible force for the GATHERING to fight for the prize.
But that will not be for awhile yet so instead...!
We invite you to a gathering of Martinez Academy of Arms fencers which will be held at SUNY Purchase on Sunday October 14th from 1pm-5pm.
Provost Andy Baiman and his students, Purchase College fencing club members, and all of MAA students are invited.
This all day fencing event will give you an open floor to fence all day long so bring all your weapons and just be ready to fence. This a rare opportunity for related fencers to come together solely for the joy of fencing.
The college is at 735 Anderson Hill Road in Purchase, NY and we'll be in the Physical Education building. For a map of the Purchase campus please go to http://www.ahfi.org/events/purchase2011/campusmap.pdf

Grand Assault of Arms
November 16th - 18th, 2012
The Association for Historical Fencing will be hosting its 10th annual Grand Assault of Arms. This year to celebrate its 10th year, the event will run for 3 days. More information on the event will be available on the AHF website shortly.
So you can beginning planning, some of the highlights will be:
- Weapons categories: Foil, Dueling Sword, Dueling Sabre, Stick Fencing, Bayonet Fencing
- A gala dinner on Friday night
- An Instructors tournament
- Demonstrations of Spanish, Italian, and Tradition rapier and dagger
As this is a 3 day event plan accordingly. The Sunday public event is scheduled from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
We are asking for volunteers to be judges, time keepers, score keepers and a personnel. Please let Maestro Acosta-Martinez know as soon as possible if you can help out.
As I mentioned in the previous newsletter, the Grand Assault is an Association for Historical Fencing event. However, Martinez Academy being the sole classical fencing school in New York City for all intents and purposes hosts the event each year. Therefore, we at Martinez Academy with the help of the AHF handle all of the logistics. As hosts we are asking all the students if you can to house some of our fellow fencers. Please let Maestro Acosta-Martinez know by the 20th of September if you can house fencers and how many.
