Dr. Jeffrey Willetts to Address our Congregation on October 9

Dr. Jeffrey G. Willetts, recently appointed dean of the McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University, will be our guest preacher on Sunday, October 9. Until he became dean at McAfee this fall, he was professor of divinity, founding dean and former vice president at the John Leland Center for Theological Studies in Arlington, Virginia.

Parkway has maintained a close relationship with McAfee since its inception and was one of the founding churches. Many of our staff members through the years have been McAfee graduates. Last year we were designated a McAfee School of Theology Teaching Congregation. Dr. King and other staff members have mentored at least fifteen students from the school and two of our former staff members, Jared Neal and Rebecca Orton, came to us through a Lilly grant administered by McAfee. Many of their faculty have led in worship and Bible study. Loyd Allen, a Parkway member, is a professor of church history and Libby Allen is administrative coordinator of the Baugh Center of Church Leadership at Mercer.

Dr. Willetts earned a B.A. in religion and philosophy, magna cum laude, from Campbell University in 1985. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in religion from Yale University and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wales, Swansea.

He has served as editor of several theological journals and philosophical publications, is the author of numerous academic papers and presentations, and is active in the Baptist World Alliance, the Society for Philosophy of Religion and the American Academy of Religion.

Dr. Willetts and his wife, the Rev. Elizabeth E. Willetts, are the parents of three adult children.
Dr. King commented, “Maintaining a close relationship with McAfee is important for our congregation as we support the ministers of the future, and from a very practical point of view, as Parkway looks to find staff members in our own future. I am looking forward to hearing Dr. Willetts as we all get to know him better.”

New Sunday School Class for
Parents of Young Children

When parents of young children consider what they want their children to be when they are grown up, they think about more than what kind of job they hope they will have or where they will live. They are more concerned with what type of adults they will be. Will they be happy, well-adjusted, respectful of authority, still friends with their parents? The list is long but most of all has to do with developing children into mature adults.
The question is how to get them to that point. This will be the focus of a new, short-term Sunday School class intended primarily for parents of children third grade and below, but open to any parents who wish to improve their skills in raising their children. The class begins
October 2.
Jim and Linda King have raised three children and Linda has had a long career as a middle school teacher. They will lead the discussion on the basis of their experience and that of their friends and colleagues, but will tailor the class to the specific questions raised by the class participants.
The class will meet in room B203 (the young adult classroom). If you have any questions, contact Jim King.
During the time this class meets Lance and Carla Wallace will lead a combined class of young adults and the Covenant Class in room A304.
