Breaking news

San Francisco International Wine Competition results are now out and here at Seifried's we are absolutely over the moon, chuffed, stoked, blown away to hear that TWO of our favourite wines have been awarded trophies! The Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2015 has been awarded ‘Best Sauvignon Blanc' with a 98 point review from the judges and a Double-Gold medal. The Seifried Winemakers Collection Nelson Sweet Agnes Riesling 2015 was also awarded ‘Best Late Harvest White', with a 94 point Double-Gold medal from the judges.

It is always such a thrill to be recognised in this way especially at a competition of this calibre, and to know that the fruits of our labour are paying off.

Sadly the Sweet Agnes Riesling 2015 has now sold out from the winery, although there is still plenty of Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2015 available for your sipping pleasure.

It's wine time

Our winemaking team has had a busy few months preparing new wines for bottling and release.

To all of our special Cellar Club members we are offering a pre-release of Aotea by Seifried Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2016. This bright, zippy single vineyard Nelson Sauvignon Blanc has exceptional length, with ripe tropical notes, and plenty of herbaceous freshness.  The Seifried Nelson Gewurztraminer 2015 is now also available via our website. Despite the very light harvest we experienced here in Nelson in 2015, this Gewürz is loaded with fragrant lavender and lychee characters, and beautifully integrated spice.

If you're looking for a tasty red wine, perfect for keeping warm this winter, Seifried Nelson Zweigelt 2014 has plenty of fruit intensity, combined with soft toasty oak and lovely savoury notes. This grape variety originates from Hermann's homeland of Austria, and is a favourite at Seifried family gatherings. Enjoy with pizza, pasta, duck – or just on its own.

From the vineyard

What better way to tidy up the weeds and long grass (and fertilise as they go), than with these lovely little fellas? A very welcome sight outside the winery office every morning! This hard-working flock is a great way to keep things tidy without the need for tractor work in the vineyard. This winter we have around 2,500 fluffy little lambs gracing us with their cuteness.

Once the lambs have done their part, the real work begins with winter pruning - our most labour intensive part of the year cranking into full gear. This is not a job for the faint hearted, our strong team of pruners are pretty tough souls. From frosty mornings, to glorious sunny afternoons and occasional wintery winds, these guys are strong both physically and mentally!

While our olive trees don't get quite the same love and tender loving care as the grape vines, our little olive grove on the border of our Brightwater Vineyard has produced a stellar crop this year. Little nuggets of goodness ready for pressing into our very own liquid gold extra-virgin olive oil. Sadly, we don't make enough to make it available for sale. However we were so excited by this year's harvest we just had to share some of these snaps with you.

Staff profile:
Brent - 20 years and still going strong

This is Brent. And this July, Brent celebrates 20 long years working alongside our family! As the longest standing member of our sales team, Brent looks after our Auckland and Northland markets, as well as being number one contact to many of our larger New Zealand key accounts. Oh how things in the market have changed over the past 20 years – not least of all the Auckland traffic!

We remember fondly the first time we met Brent. We flew him to Nelson for a job interview.....but unfortunately after a long day of chatting and tastings, we were late getting him back to the airport and he missed his flight home to Auckland. Brent's first night with us was staying in the spare bedroom at Hermann and Agnes' home. He was offered the job over Weetbix at breakfast.

Other than the tireless hours spent peddling wine, Brent enjoys a busy home life trying to keep up with his two teenagers and staying fit with the odd bout of squash, soccer, water-skiing and boating - when conditions on the harbour are right.

Summer has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere and so has our peak trading time of the year. Long, warm summer days, with plenty of bright, lively, fruit driven Nelson wines are being enjoyed across the globe. We've spent some time getting to know our customers a little better over the last few months with visits to see some of our fabulous distributors.

Hermann and Agnes had a successful time attending the London International Wine Fair in May with the fantastic team from John E Fells, our UK distributors, followed by a fun evening presenting a line-up of some of our best wines to the Cambridge University's Wine Society.
Marie, our UK/Europe Sales Manager has spent a huge portion of the past few months living out of a suitcase while she enjoys superb hospitality in some of our favourite places; Germany, Bulgaria, Finland and Russia, as well as time out and about in the trade around England.
Chris has been in China enjoying some time with our amazing team there. From Shanghai to Beijing, then Nanning and wrapping up in Guangzhou, Chris spent a short but very successful week taking in the sights and presenting a selection of our wines to this burgeoning and enthusiastic market.
I spent much of May working with the Pacific Prime Wines' team and our wonderful distributors in various locations across the States – from Boston to LA and a scattering of places in between. Kicking off on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington DC, Seifried enjoyed the Pacific Prime Wines fifth annual trade tasting with our friends and colleagues from Pacific Prime Wines Wine Imports.

It's wine time

We're looking forward to heading north to present two back-to-back tastings at the Westend Wine Club in Rotorua on Tuesday 27th September, and to Papamoa Wine Club on Wednesday 28th September.  We'll then be back in the Mainland to present on Tuesday 8th November at Riccarton Wine Club, and to Ashburton MSA Wine Club on Wednesday 9th November.  We'll be showing a range of lesser known, smaller parcel wines and are looking forward to some fun nights out!  Contact us if you'd like information on how to get involved.

From our family to yours. Cheers!
