Please join us for the Colour Society of Australia NSW Division September 2016 event: NSW state AGM plus Scenes of Childhood with children’s book illustrator Freya Blackwood, Thursday September 29th, 6.30 for 7.00 pm

Dear NSW Division members and friends,

I am very pleased to announce that our September 2016 event will be a presentation by the acclaimed children’s book illustrator Freya Blackwood. Described by Penguin Books as “one of the most talented children's illustrators in the world today”, Freya has illustrated more than 25 children’s books, each with a distinctive colour palette and visual style. This rare opportunity to see Freya discussing her work in Sydney is a great coup for the Colour Society, and I hope all members will encourage their friends, associates and students to attend, and will help to publicize it in any way that they can.

A poster you could use to advertise the event can be downloaded from this link.

This event is likely to be booked out, so please register early to avoid disappointment.

The Annual General Meeting of the NSW Division will now be held at the Albion Centre on Thursday September 29th at 7.00 pm, immediately preceding Freya’s talk. Please note the change of date from Tuesday September 27 previously advised by email to financial members. Nominations have been called (1) for a member of the general committee and (2) for the position of Social Secretary, which is vacant following the departure of Natasha Newman due to heavy work commitments. We all thank Natasha for her outstanding efforts during her time in the position. Members wishing to submit nominations should do so by Tuesday 20th September to me at djcbriggs@gmail.com. Members who are unable to attend this meeting in person may appoint another member to vote on their behalf. The nominations and proxy forms will be distributed in advance of the meeting. If you have any queries regarding the meeting, please contact me at djcbriggs@gmail.com.

Best Regards,
David Briggs

"Freya Blackwood is one of the most talented children's illustrators in the world today. Her stunning and iconic illustrations perfectly capture the warmth and complexity of growing up. While warm and classic, her style has a unique quality that renders her work instantly recognisable. The pathos of her characters is a joy to behold, and her work has deservedly captured international attention and a swag of awards and nominations."

Freya Blackwood lives and works in Orange, NSW, and since 2003 has illustrated more than 25 children’s books ranging from the whimsical to the deeply moving. In 2007 her collaboration with Libby Gleeson, Amy & Louis, won a Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year (Early Childhood) award, and in 2010 Freya became one of the very few Australians to be awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for best-illustrated children's book published in the U.K, for her part in the sublime Harry & Hopper. In 2015 three of her books, Go to Sleep, Jessie!, The Cleo Stories: The Necklace and The Present, and My Two Blankets won Children's Book Council of Australia awards, the first time in the awards' 69-year history that a single creator has been honoured three times in the same year. Samples of ten of Freya’s books can be viewed on her website

Freya’s talk will be preceded by our NSW state AGM from 7.00 to approximately 7.15 pm.
