ARPA-E Releases RFI on Ion Conductors for Electrochemical Cells
 
ARPA-E has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input on ion conductors for electrochemical cells. Specifically, ARPA-E is soliciting information from researchers and technologists from a broad range of fields on how to achieve transformational gains in the ability to selectively conduct ions in electrochemical cells that have a significant impact on ARPA-E mission areas.  ARPA-E is particularly interested in ideas that will realize a full set of attributes ultimately required for practical electrochemical devices to achieve high impact. 

ARPA-E seeks innovations that are deeply informed by the inextricable links among materials, fabrication, and the device or process context. The information provided may be used by ARPA-E in support of program planning. For more information and to view the full RFI on ARPA-E Exchange, click HERE

ARPA-E Will Extend the Close Date for IDEAS to September 2016

The IDEAS program, which was initially launched in September 2013 and extended for a second year in September 2014, provides support for early-stage applied research to explore new concepts with the potential for transformative changes in energy technology.  

ARPA-E views IDEAS as a success and - in a modification of the FOA to be released soon - plans to extend this funding opportunity to September 30, 2016, subject to appropriations.
ARPA-E Seeks Fellows!

ARPA-E is looking for the next generation of scientific leaders to help solve the most pressing and exciting challenges in energy. The Fellows assist the agency in identifying possible breakthrough energy technologies through technical and economic analyses.

During their two-year tenure, ARPA-E Fellows undergo a full-immersion experience in energy technology development, engaging with world-class researchers in academia and industry, entrepreneurs, and government officials.

Interested applicants can view the requirements and instructions for the position in the Job Opportunities tab of the ARPA-E website. The deadline to apply for a Fellows position is Friday, October 16, 2015.

 
11 Projects Funded for 
High-Performance Solar Power
     
Today in Las Vegas, President Obama and Energy Secretary Moniz announced at the Clean Energy Summit $24 million in innovation funding for 11 new solar technologies, as part of ARPA-E’s newest program, MOSAIC. Short for Micro-scale Optimized Solar-cell Arrays with Integrated Concentration, MOSAIC projects seek to develop a new class of cost-effective, high-performance solar energy modules.  

ARPA-E Director Dr. Ellen D. Williams responded to the announcement, stating “The MOSAIC program demonstrates ARPA-E’s novel approach to energy innovation. By bringing together cutting edge advances in micro-fabrication, materials science and mechanical actuation, MOSAIC will create new options for solar generation and help make clean energy technologies even more affordable.”  

MOSAIC aims to develop new solar modules with the high performance of concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technologies, but at a cost and profile similar to commonly used flat-plate PV. Although CPV is much more efficient than flat-plate PV, CPV has not been widely adopted due to its high cost, large size and expensive solar tracking systems. MOSAIC project teams will address these limitations by designing micro-scale CPV systems that can be integrated into flat-plate solar panels. These micro-CPV technologies will use thousands of small lenses to concentrate sunlight onto an array of micro-PV cells in order to achieve a higher solar-to-electricity conversion. By exploiting micro-CPV techniques, the teams aim to reduce system costs and dramatically improve flat-plate PV efficiency – and thereby expand the market and geographic areas in which these technologies can operate successfully.

ARPA-E Awardee Featured in MIT Top 35 Under 35
Aaswath Raman, the Principal Investigator for an ARPA-E award to Stanford University, was recently featured in MIT Technology Review’s 2015 35 Innovators Under 35. Stanford is developing a device for the rooftops of buildings and cars that will reflect sunlight and emit heat, enabling passive cooling, even when the sun is shining. 

If successful, Stanford's radiative coolers would improve the energy efficiency of buildings and vehicles, save consumers money, and reduce peak-power demand. For more information on the Stanford project, please visit the ARPA-E website.
