ARPA-E Welcomes New Senior Commercialization Advisor

Earlier this month, ARPA-E welcomed Ryan Umstattd, Ph.D, Lieutenant Colonel (ret.) as a Senior Commercialization Advisor. Mr. Umstattd will identify and facilitate partnerships between ARPA-E and the Department of Defense (DoD) to foster greater collaboration on energy technologies.

Recently retired from the Air Force, Mr. Umstattd brings an extensive knowledge of research development and market funding to ARPA-E. Previously, he served as Deputy Director for Space and Sensor Systems within the Research Directorate of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering for the Air Force. He was responsible for directing, planning, and allocating resources for the $550M annual DoD science and technology investment in space programs. Mr. Umstattd is excited to use his understanding of research investment portfolios to enhance the commercial viability of ARPA-E’s projects.

“Through the various jobs I performed during my Air Force career, I experienced first-hand what it takes to deliver new capabilities. My combination of experience will be useful as I help guide successful ARPA-E projects toward development, particularly within the community of Department of Defense users,” states Mr. Umstattd.

Mr. Umstattd received his B.Sc. in Physics from Santa Clara University and his M.Sc and Ph.D in Applied Science from the University of California, Davis. He has received several medals and honors for his service in the military including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal, among others.
