Our week about town has started.....
below are just some of the exciting events from the varied and fascinating programme we have in store for you. Jazz, chamber music, young composers, dance, a family show – the one thing all these concerts have in common is superb musicians.

Dramatic ballads of love, betrayal and death
Jon Boden, former lead singer of turbo-folk heroes Bellowhead joins the Sacconi Quartet to perform Elvis Costello’s Shakespearean song cycle The Juliet Letters.

Young composer showcase
23 September, 2pm
Swinburne Hall,
Colchester Institute

Be present at the world premiere of several new works by the musicians of tomorrow, when the Sacconi Quartet performs compositions by students of Colchester Institute.

This new project for Roman River Music has given the students the amazing opportunity of working with an internationally-acclaimed ensemble. The concert gives a fascinating insight into young, creative minds.

So high was the standard of the finished pieces that all were selected for performance at this concert. 

The Sacconi also performs Out of Time by Jonathan Dove.

New York, London, Europe - the world is celebrating Steve Reich's 80th birthday this year....but only after Colchester celebrates with an all-American whirlwind of rock music, driving rhythms, melody and popular culture, with the fabulous Dr K Sextet.

The Barbican says:

Contrasts
23 September, 8pm
Firstsite

Three wonderful musicians who played at early Roman River concerts at the beginning of their careers now return at the peak of their powers to join the Festival’s Artistic Director.

Matthew Hunt, Benjamin Nabarro, Alastair Beatson and Kate Gould play three rarely performed and contrasting 20th-century pieces by Bartók, Stravinsky and Adès, performed in the unique contemporary setting of Firstsite, with its Roman mosaic underfoot, adding yet further contrasts to the evening.

The story so far...

What a start to the Roman River Music Festival!


Five fantastic concerts over three days - full houses, amazing performers and appreciative audiences. So a big thank you to both performers and concert-goers for contributing to such a wonderful opening weekend.

Below is the expectant audience for Tom Poster and the Piatti Quartet at the beautiful church in Coggeshall on Saturday night.
