Buisnesstry: Ministry that Works

Several years ago, Tim and Marthan Ellison were addicted to meth. Today, the two are followers of Jesus who have used their background in automotive repair to launch a unique ministry, Mr. Godwrench Automotive, in their hometown in West Chester, Ohio. Their business provides quality automotive repair to the Greater Cincinnati Area.

But that’s not all. After visiting The Happy Church in Jackson, Kentucky, on a mission’s trip in 2009, the couple was especially moved by the poverty that grips the area of the Appalachians. Since 2011, the Ellisons have traveled to The Happy Church to give free oil changes to impoverished families, many of whom are single parents raising multiple children.

“We started out in March of 2009 with a small vision to help the hurting and downtrodden,” said Tim. “That small vision has turned into much bigger things. This will be our 29th vehicle we have helped give away and our team has done hundreds of free oil changes in three different states.”

“Our hearts were especially broken for the needs of Jackson. It's like a part of the country the world has forgotten about,” said Tim. He and his wife are currently raising $4,000 to travel to Jackson once again this September to offer 150 free oil changes, as well as give away 12 new bicycles to needy kids and a van to a family in need.

“On our trip last year a little boy came by on his bike, wanting some air in his really bald tire,” recalls Tim. “We pumped it up, and guess what? It blew out. Needless to say, his expression was heart-wrenching!  We immediately went and got him a brand new bike. That little act of kindness was the highlight for all our workers.

“Unless you have ‘hands on’ in Jackson, you cannot understand the joy it brings us to show the love of Christ through Mr. Godwrench. We use a simple oil and filter change to point people to Christ.”

The Ellisons hope to continue using this practical, need-meeting ministry to be a light to the people of Jackson.

“I may not wear a suit and tie or be a pastor, but we use what God called us to do to reach people for the cause of Christ,” said Tim. “We call it ‘buisnesstry.' Praise God it works.”

"Remember, you may not be ready, but God is always ready -- and He promises to go with you. All you have to do is step out in obedience. He’s got the rest."

How have you taken a risk for Christ?

During the final session of Flinch Conference, the national conference of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches (FGBC), conference attendees were challenged to take a risk to share the gospel. Each picked up a wrist band with the hashtag, #myflinchrisk, in a color that related to the type of risk he or she was committed to take with instructions to share that risk on social media (using the hashtag). Learn more about the challenge here and follow the posts at the #myflinchrisk photo wall.
