GraceConnect E-News, No. 6, Week of July 22, 2013
The eNewsletter for the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches
It's that time of year -- the annual Grace Brethren family reunion known as national conference! It's the last in a season of events this summer where those in the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches (FGBC) have an opportunity to gather. National conference, known as Vision2020 South, will be held beginning Friday in Atlanta, Ga. Read more about it in this issue of GraceConnect eNews.

Also in this edition is a report about last week's Momentum Youth Conference, which was held at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind., and a reminder to check out the current issue of GraceConnect magazine, the quarterly print publication of the FGBC.

This week's featured product is Beyond Desolate, an excellent resource not only for victims of sexual abuse, but for their friends and family and for pastors and counselors. It looks at the story of Tamar, the daughter of David, and how Jesus can bring hope into a world of ache. It is available as an e-book, but only the print version is available for the special price at bmhbooks.com.

The Grace Brethren are Atlanta-Bound

The national conference of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches meets this week in Atlanta, Ga. Beginning on Friday evening, July 26, the conference continues through July 31. Sessions will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel and Conference Center on the north side of Atlanta.

The week will be marked with challenging speakers such as David Flynn, who will present a dramatic presentation of the story of Adoniram Judson; Chip Sweney, Director of Unite! Atlanta; Randy Pope, Perimeter Church, Atlanta, who will speak on transformational leadership; Jason Haymaker, lead pastor at the Western Reserve Grace Church, Macedonia, Ohio, who will also speak on leadership; and Alfredo Abreu, National Ministry Partner, Encompass World Partners. Bob Fetterhoff, executive director - Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches and pastor of the Grace Brethren Church in Wooster, Ohio, will preside over the meetings.

A new feature this year are the Learning Labs held on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, that will provide practical ideas for outreach in local churches. Topics range from urban ministry and a model church to business as mission and reaching out to refugees.

At Wednesday's business meeting for the FGBC, delegates from Grace Brethren congregations will vote on regional representatives to the Fellowship Council, the advisory board for the fellowship. Nominated from the East Region are (with their district and church listed): Dennis Fay, Chesapeake, Waldorf, Md., Grace Brethren Church; Mark Lingenfelter, Western Pennsylvania, Leamersville, Pa., Grace Brethren Church; and Larry Orme, Northern Atlantic, Penn Valley Church, Telford, Pa., campus. Momentum Focus is "I Am Second"

Ed Lewis at MomentumFrom beginning to end, “I am Second” was not just a theme at the 2013 Momentum Youth Conference. It was taught from the platform, practiced in needy communities around the host campus, and lived out in the lives of speakers, youth leaders, volunteers, and others.

Held at Indiana Wesleyan University (Marion, Ind.) from July 16-July 21, it was a week marked by transparent speakers and worship leaders. Each shared from the heart and compelled students and others to put the words of John 3:30 into action: “He must increase, I must decrease.”

Nearly 2,000 students, youth workers, volunteers, and others came from 14 states and provinces in North America. They came from as far away as British Columbia, the western United States, and Florida. They came to hear speakers like Francis Chan, Derwin Gray, Afshin Ziafat, Sean McDowell, Jim Brown, Keith Minier, Clayton King, and Jeff Bogue. God used those men to move hearts. Hundreds of young people made decisions for Christ -- for the first time or to serve him with their lives.

DecisionsAfternoons were packed with Your Day Your Way opportunities -- sports tournaments, musical competition, Bible quizzing, and other activities. But it's probably safe to say the most satisfying activities were the daily Acts 1:8 opportunities that helped students take the gospel to the "Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Daily, groups left campus to minister. Saturday, except for about 75 who stayed to pack 1,000 WASH packs for Haiti, students headed to weed gardens, sort clothes, pick up trash, initiate spiritual conversations, and other activities in the name of Jesus. A total of 2,952 individuals went to 62 different places. (Some went more than once.)

"We invited God to be here and I believe he was here," said Ed Lewis, executive director of CE National.

The conference concluded with students and adults receiving an "On Mission" bracelet as a reminder to continue to keep commitments they had made at Momentum.

Next year, Momentum heads to the Chicago area as the conference will be held July 22-27, 2014, at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

Once upon a time in a faraway land, a long, long, time ago, a beautiful girl lived in a royal palace. And as many daughters of kings do, she waited for the day when her Prince Charming would arrive on the scene, recognize her beauty, and fall in love with her. Prince Charming never came. She didn’t live happily ever after. Something devastating happened.

Her brother raped her.

Her brother.

Like an unannounced tornado that touches down before unsuspecting city-dwellers have a chance to take cover, sexual abuse blindsides victims in its wake. Against the backdrop of torment, Jesus, a fellow-sufferer, speaks into our anguish and paves the road toward a life beyond desolate. Beyond Desolate proclaims hope into a world not absent of ache, but a world where He bleeds with us and brings us a new song.

Beyond Desolate is an excellent resource for victims of sexual abuse, friends and families of victims, and pastors and counselors.
