How do you launch a successful organization?
I get asked that question ALL the time, so I wanted to pause and spend some time working through how I started Help One Now. My goal in the next 7 weeks is to help you understand some of the nuts and bolts of launching a successful organization.
I think my story is very important and here's why: because it's NORMAL. Sometimes, we want to be like the one-percenters, which is not my story at all. I’ve fought extremely hard for the past four years to build a healthy organization. However, I've been inspired and spent time learning from the 1%'s and I'm thankful for them. But, I'm not one of them and I think that will be helpful for most folks to learn.
Why listen to me?
- In the past 3.5 years or so, we took a $1,000 investment and raised close to $3,000,000. How did we do that?
- Every year we have nearly doubled our growth.
- We have a staff of 13 people, whereas three years ago we had a staff of one.
- We now work in four countries.
- We are seeing legitimate community transformation taking place.
Of course, you might not want to listen after all, because …
- We made every mistake possible, or at least it seems that way.
- We're still a small nonprofit.
- We've only be doing work for 4+ years.
What will you learn?
We will walk through 7 key steps to success.
1) The Decision - The Why
2) The Team - The Who
3) The Power of Story - Why you need one and how to tell it.
4) Funding - How to raise money for your mission.
5) The Tribe - Microphones, operations, and the masses.
6) Execution - This is why most nonprofits fail.
7) Celebrate - How to pause, reflect and celebrate success.
We bootstrapped Help One Now with $1,000 and a dream in 2009.
We overcome what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles. We built a team of people who are amazing. However, we started out with no idea how to end poverty or run an organization (many days, we still feel clueless) but we kept at it, worked hard and we have been able to do some great work.
Also, over the course of the past two years, I’ve gained a deep awareness that my calling is connected to two key outcomes: fighting global extreme poverty and helping leaders launch movements that do good.
With this newsletter, I want to:
Before we jump into the nitty gritty, let me say this: my goal is that these posts will help empower you and your team with some key, vital information. Sometimes, we don’t know what we don’t know. The nonprofit and social entrepreneurs’ world is unique, very new and rapidly changing, and the field is crowded with folks who want to do good. That makes it so easy to drown in all the noise, chaos and options.
We need you, but what we don’t need is a weak, flailing, confused you. We need you be to be strong, have courage and be effective. We need you to solve the problems that you are passionate about.
I hope these words would bring hope and direction to you. Hope that you can make a difference, and direction that will help push you forward and be more effective. I will try to be real and honest -- no gimmicks, no fudging the numbers. I will just give raw information that will benefit and encourage you.
We Need Collaboration
I get up every day and lean into evil with light and love and hope. I know that I cannot do this alone. I know that Help One Now cannot do this alone. We need each other.
We need more effective organizations, empowered nonprofits, businesses that do good, churches and social innovators. We need more resources, better teams, better education, and more mentors along the way. We cannot go it alone; the fear can cripple you, the issues can be paralyzing.
But, the hope is exhilarating. When you see communities transformed and lives changed, it’s absolutely amazing. When you see real people have real hope and opportunity to better themselves and their community, it makes all the "hard" worth it.
I need you to help me.
Below, is a simple tweet or FB post. I want as many people to be able to read this as possible. Can you do me a favor: click TWEET THAT and share it on Twitter, and then copy and paste it and share it on FB. Also, if you know some people who would benefit from this, please email them the link as well. I will update this page with each post as they go live. So, consider this to be the landing page in the series.
I appreciate all of you.
On a journey to do good and end extreme poverty!
